Off-duty cop stops heist while getting a haircut

March 31, 2003

BY CURTIS LAWRENCE STAFF REPORTER

An off-duty Grand Crossing District tactical officer foiled a barbershop robbery while he was getting a haircut at a West Side shop, according to police reports.

The 33-year-old officer was at Carter's Barbershop, 3254 W. Cermak, when the barber buzzed in a young man at the door, said Marquette District Sgt. John Kenny. Two more young men rushed in, and the three announced they were robbing the shop, which was serving about six customers, police said.

One suspect began collecting wallets and jewelry from two customers, and another suspect began ushering customers to the back of the shop, Kenny said. The officer started to the back of the shop, but then turned, identified himself and drew his weapon, Kenny said. When one suspect failed to drop his gun, the officer fired several shots.

No one was hit. The suspect dropped his gun, and the three men attempted to flee. But the door was locked and they could not escape. The officer, a patron of the barbershop since childhood, held the suspects until other officers arrived.

Andrew Collins, 17, of the 1400 block of South Millard, was charged with six counts of aggravated attempted robbery and six counts of aggravated assault; William Joshua, 23, of Aurora, was charged with six counts of attempted robbery, and a 16-year-old was charged with six counts of attempted robbery, police said.

Tactical Officer? is that like SWAT? If so, why did he fire several shots without hitting anything?

Now just how much money could you possibly get from a BARBERSHOP? No wonder they are criminals, they are too dumb to work at Mickey D's.

Driz, it is my understanding from going to skul with a few Tac Officers from CPD that TOs are intermediaries between regular po-po and the ERTs. They carry shotguns or 635s (the officers I met had 635s), higher level vests, and work in teams but are scattered throughout their districts. They come running when the stuff gets heavy.

Make me chief and I'll order cops to get haircuts once a week. That ought to solve barbershop robberies. ;)

i think the "tactical" should be removed from his title, least until he can start hitting what he shoots at.

reminds me of martin lawrences recent mall-ninja-turned-wannabe-cop-turned-rejected-recruit movie. i forget the name of it.

I dunno. How many keyboard commandos here have proven that they can hit a man when the balloon goes up? I know I haven't.

Eagerly awaiting replies,
Mike ;)

Regardless of what you think, he got the job done and nobody was hit. If the cop had hit and killed one/some/all there are quite a few people who would be questioning if the cop really needed to shoot them. He gets the job done and still doesn't get a tip of the hat here. Wonder how that feels; every time... :uhoh:
