Just a quick question. How many legal guns are there in the us vs how many illegal guns

This page references a study done by the Clinton administration that estimated 4,000,000 illegal, fully-automatic firearms!

And how many crimes are committed each year by someone with one of those "illegal, fully-automatic firearms?" :D

I want to know exactly what an "illegal gun" is. I've been hearing this term a lot lately.

Is it a gun that snuck itself in the country without proper documentation?

Is it a gun that manufactured itself without a serial number?

Is it a gun that jumped up and robbed somebody?

Is it a gun that stuck itself under the matrress of it's new unsuspecting owner?

In my view, the only "illegal" gun would be one that was stolen from it's rigthful owner or one that was manufactured/imported illegally.

I've been shooting many years and many places and have yet to see my first illegal fully auto. If there was really 4 million wouldn't some of us have encounter them by now? But wait.... 4 million is the number of NRA members so assuming we all must have one they arrived at this conservative estimate.

(more like 4,000,000 illegal, fully-automatic interns if the Clinton admin did the study)

Let us not forget that a criminal may not be required to testify against him/herself. The rest of us would be charged with obstruction of justice or some such.

We don't have any figures on illegally owned guns, but as soon as John Kerry imposes gun registration, all the crooks will register their guns and we will have exact numbers. Then all the legally owned guns will be confiscated so only Kerry's criminal and terrorist friends will be armed.

I note his "national security adviser" was caught stealing classified documents, maybe to turn them over to Al Qaeda. And these clowns will "protect" us better than Bush?

I've seen an unregistered uzi - the owner is a former 'banger who is now grown up, and gone straight, but he doesn't want to part with it.

And last week, I was at a pub having dinner, and some fellow saw my KCR t-shirt, and started telling me that machine guns were illegal, and he knew so, because a couple of years ago he paid a fellow $700 for a full auto SKS... I had to restrain myself from telling him (a) that he shouldn't talk about that sorta thing to complete strangers; and (b) that he got ripped off.

Thats crazy! If the ATF got wind they would come in jack boots stomping and shoot his dog and crush his kitten.

Would someone please think about the pets!

I would love to see the definition of an illegal gun.

One time one of my non gun friends tried to tell me that my Mini 14 was illegal becuase I had a 40 roud mag for it!!! I explained to him that the mag was made before 1994 and that the Mini 14 was almost 20 year old. He didn't believe me! I don't hang out with him anymore. I can't stand people that think they are right, especially when they don't have a clue.

There was also the person that asked if all my guns were "registered" My response was "Registered with who??" He wasn't sure who I should register them with just figured that was what you were supposed to do.

A lot of people figure that owning a lot of guns is illegal. Bottom line is most people really don't understand the law very well.

I find the 4,000,000 figure for unregistered machine guns awfully tough to swallow. That puts the numbers at approximately 80,000 per state! Does this seem possible? I guess it could be but I have yet to meet anyone locally with a machine gun be it legal or not.
