I'm kinda new to Washington, what are opinions on using a hunting guide?

Im stationed at ft lewis(army), and I dont know to much about the area in terms of fishing and hunting, but I really want to get into the woods to do some hunting and have a good savage 110 30-06, Im thinking in terms hunting Black/white tail mule deer maybe elk if possible but dont know where to start and really want to do it right , what is the best plan of actions in terms of getting ready for the up coming season better sooner than later.

I don't know Washington state. I'd suggest you get a GPS, log on your truck location and go out hiking to familiarize yourself with the country. Use the GPS for back up, check it to see how your doing. Even short one hour hikes will help to start.

I am also a new hunter to Washington state, last season was my first one out. One thing I found is that it's easy to find game when it's NOT hunting season, and that changes on opening day.

Go out scouting, learn where to go during different times of the year, and the further out you can get, the better your luck will be. The only time I had a serious opportunity to take a shot last year I was so far out that hauling anything back would have been a nightmare alone. :banghead:

If you have the money (guides are expensive!) yeah, go for it. But realize that even then there is no guarantee! Success rates are low here in Washington, I'm not sure why. I think the key is to plan to spend a lot of time out there.

It is strange to me that success is so low. Oregon to our south is better, BC to our north is way better, Idaho to our east is better.

If you were going to spend the money for a guide, I'd probably go to BC, where chances are very good.

I've heard (hearsay) the east side is better for mulies than the west side, although I never hunted out in WA to know. One of my coworkers or his father always came home with at least one between them per season. Never had a lack of seeing them, but stalking them to get close could be a problem.
