Hello gigantic gun forum! I just registered. I love guns and shooting, and actually grew up shooting and have many guns that I have just inherited. I want to get back into shooting. But now I'm an adult and have learned that having a really solid understanding of the basics, of any art form, is essential if you want to get really good at it.

What I'm looking for is a book on guns, rifles in particular, and what makes an accurate rifle, the concepts involved, and also some really in-depth information of how to be as accurate as I can. Can anyone suggest a book or two that would be an incredible resource for someone wanting to learn as much as they can about how to be a great shot?

It's a bit dated now but I have "The Accurate Rifle", IIRR the author is Page or maybe Paige. I'm not home so I can't check. It's mostly benchrest related.

Army Shooting Manual. Seems to be the top book on everyone's list.
Also if you wanted you could do a google for top competition marksmen and see what books they recommend, or just wait because I'm sure there will be a huge response from the great members of The High Road :)

The Army Marksmanship Manual

It is directed toward target shooting, but is an excellent primer on grasping the weapon, stance, sight use and trigger control. None of which will hurt you in any form of shooting.

Check Amazon.com and search books for "Army Marksmanship".

There are numerous other books on the subject. For serious defense, Shooting to Live by Fairbairn and Sykes is probably the first one needed. Some of the ideas on holsters need revision for our time, but the basics of shooting is timeless.

The list goes on; there are great books by (in no particular order of importance) Elmer Keith, Skeeter (Charles) Skelton, Jeff Cooper and many others. You might try your local library before purchasing a lot of books. You will if become a student of the art, but libraries are great to find out what appeals to you.

I did a quick google search for "Army Shooting Manual" and got varying results. Do you have a link to the one you are thinking about? I like the sound of this manual ;)
