What is currently the most fun and cheapest to shoot surplus pistol. I'm currently looking at the nagant revolver, the CZ 52, and a Tokarev. I'm mainly looking for a fun factor and ammo cost, but I'd like to be able to hit what I'm aiming at:D
Whats out there for under $200

Thanks,
HB

Well, the Nagant has a certain weird kind of cool to it but the best deal out there now is probably the CZ. 9X18 is available and relatively inexpensive. Too bad the days of the cheap Maks are gone.

HB:

I have both a CZ 52 and a Tokarev, and I like them both a good bit. They are considerably different in size and handling, but both great fun to shoot. I have never owned a Nagant, nor do I ever plan to do so. They seem to be more novelty than I care to own. But that might just be me.

Of the three you mentioned I only have experience with the Tokarev and it is a hoot to shoot. I was expecting a roughly finished and loose handgun but what I got was pretty sweet indeed. The trigger is nice, accuracy is terrific. I was expecting a lot of recoil and muzzle blast but it's not like that at all. The 7.62x25 round is fun to shoot and very cheap (for now). The price is a tad higher than your $200 budget. I think mine was $209 + shipping. Spare mags go for $8.

I recently picked up three excellent milsurps. The Romanian Tok for $209, the CZ-82 for $209, and a Star Modelo Super A from Sarco at $139.90. The first two looked brand new, the Star was definitely worn.
If you like a small doublestack in 9x18 Makarov that is double action or cocked and locked, go with the CZ-82. It is the most modern pistol of this crew. It is very accurate and fun to shoot.

The Star Super A uses the 9x23 Largo, which is dimensionally equal to the 9x23 Winchester. Three quarters of them will shoot 38 Super right out of the box, the other quarter needs the breech face opened a bit.

The Tok shoots the firebreathing 7.62x25 round, but a simple barrel change will get it to shoot 9x19 Luger. Ream a spare 9mm Barrel out a bit and you can fire the 9x23 Winchester or 9x23 Largo in it. If you go with the Tok you might want to check out a forum dedicated to the Tok. PM me for the address.
In any case, I suggest you check out the following thread: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=1667&highlight=tokarev+9x23

Aaaah, skip the CZ 52. I had one, it was horrible.

Very sharp edges (note the curve directly under the trigger guard), shot 1' lower than POA, tiny TINY sights.

You'd be better served with possibly a CZ 82 or something.

CZ-82 it's in the $200 range. Excellent buy for the money, 9x18mm is relatively inexpensive.

Nagant revolvers can be found in the $80-120 range. Ammo is expensive. Horrible double action trigger pulls.

CZ-52 and Tokarev are in the $150-200 range. Surplus ammo is cheap, but it's all corrosive. Non-corrosive ammo is not cheap.
The CZ-52 needs some work to make it safe to shoot (replace firing pin, rollers, never use the decocker). But, it's suprisingly accurate, if you can deal with the tiny sights. However, I recently traded my CZ-52 for 1080 rounds of .30Carbine ammo and I feel I got the better deal.

If you like to tweak things, the CZ 52 is the way to go. If you want to leave them as is, the CZ 82s and TT33s are fantastic. The Makarov is also great as is.

Corrosive ammo will only corrode if you leave the weapon dirty in some humidity. Just spray with Windex to neutralize before you clean and there's no problem. It's still $119 for 1224 rounds of 7.62 at AIM.

I recently bought a Norinco 213 for cheap. It's a Chinese TT33 in 9MM. While not really a surplus pistol, it looks like one. It is the easiest shooting, most accurate handgun I own now. I was amazed at how nice it was.

All of the above listed are good choices. I have a CZ52 and a Nagant. The ammo for the CZ is cheap however; the factory ammo for the Nagant (7.62x38) is way too expensive therefore I shoot 32 S&W Longs from it.

Go with the CZ-52. You'll have to replace the firing pin with an aftermarket machined pin, but you can also find 9mm barrels for them. 7.62x25 ammo isn't all expensive: you can find new-made, boxer-primed non-corrosive Prvi Partizan for about $13 a box from AIM Surplus. Not a bad deal for 50 rounds of anything.

It's also over 1700 FPS. And belches flame like you wouldn't believe.

I highly recommend that you only shoot non-corrosive, because corrosive primers don't just hurt your barrel: the mercuric evil will get everywhere within the intricate frame of the '52. The results will quite possibly make you cry. (If you have a soul.) :)

The Romanian Tok and the CZ-52 fire the same ammunition, the 7.62x25 Tokarev round.

My CZ-52 is combat accurate (minute of torso/5-gallon bucket) out to 100 yards easily. It's cheap, the ammo's cheap (pretty much the only milsurp ammo that still is). It doesn't have the best ergonomics and the sights could be better, but for what it is (a range toy) I love it.

Still looking for a Makarov... any Makarov... :(

CZ-52 or Tokarev

I own two CZ-52s and they are two of the best shooting guns I have. I put a 9mm parabellum barrel in one and left the other at 7.62x25. Both will hit as good as you can shoot out to 25 yards.

I got one of the Romanian Tokarevs in 7.62x25 as well. It's also a great gun and shoots as good as you can out to 25 yards or so. It's a little more expensive though.

I have one of the Nagant revolvers too. That lame ass ammo they have for it is so expensive and fairly difficult to reload. You can't hit the broad side of a barn with one of these using the correct ammo for it. DISCLAIMER: DONOT TRY THE FOLLOWING, if you do it is at your own risk and I will not be held liable. I use .32 S&W long ammo in this little revolver and it works just fine. It is not the correct ammo for the gun so if you try it, don't blame me if you have problems. The gun shoots great out to 10 yards with the .32 S&W long. Only problem is you can't reload because it splits the end of the brass. Other than that, it works great for me. Again, it is the wrong ammo for the gun. If you try this, you take responsibility for whatever happens.

These are are all Misurp guns so don't expect nice, shiny perfect guns that look new. They all shoot great and ammo is cheap and plentiful for most of them. If I wanted the best of the 3 and wanted to spend as little as possible and have a good gun with cheap ammo, I'd go with the CZ-52.

You'll have to tear it down, clean it good and oil it good when you get it. After that just buy yourself one of them spam cans of 1200 round of 7.62x25 for about $80 at the nearest gun show and your off. That 7.62x25 cartridge kicks ass. It sounds, shoots and handles like a much bigger caliber than it is.

Good Luck,

Joe

+1 on the Walther P1 from Dan's Ammo. The "minty" ones that he is selling are in near-perfect shape. And it's a Walther, which back in the day really meant something. Plus, it's great fun to watch the folks on the shooting line to your left look up in surprise when the brass starts flying in their direction.

I have a big soft spot for the Nagants, but they're not for everybody. The trigger pull is .. unique. I don't mind it myself but it is rather slow in double action. In the real world it functions best if you load it with the CCCP lead slugs and use it in single action mode as a kit gun. Hunting small game with them is a kick in the pants, but the fiocchi has no killing power. If you want to use one for more than that you need to handload, and handloading the 7.62 Nagant ain't easy!
