I'm looking to buy another handgun in the next 2 weeks and I can't make up my mind what to purchase. I already have a Glock 19, Glock 26, Ruger P89, Taurus PT145, XD45 Compact, Springfield Trophy Match 1911, and a Ruger Mark II.

I was considering a .357 Snubby, but I really would like to add another smallish .45 that would be appropiate for CCW. I was thinking really hard about a Glock 30, but I have never really been too turned on by the squarishness of it.

So what do you guys think? I'm looking for suggestions in both .45's and .357 snubs in the $400 to $600 range.

In 357 mag, I like vintage S&W mod 60, 66 in something a tad newer, a pre lock 640. If you want new, look at the Ruger SP101.
For a 45 acp - the Glock 30 is a nice choice in this price range.

I would say go with xd compact, but you already have one! What about the Glock 36, it's a single stack so it's a bit thinner. G30 is 1.27" wide and G36 is 1.13" wide, not much of a difference but still.

If you want a highly effective small handgun, the Ruger SP101 is hard to beat. I like the 3 1/16" barrel. It's easier to shoot than a shorter-barreled snubby. The Ruger is really the only small revolver than you can shoot with full power .357s on a regular basis and not develop bad habits.

Check out Para Ordnance. I particularly like the Carry LDA

taurus PT145 Mil-pro ya will love it and it'll compliment the XD very well, somewhere there is a thread asking about bersa vs taurus 145 read it everything ya want to know is in there

A vintage 2.5" S&W model 19 or 66 .357 magnum~!

I would agree with both the people who suggested this. Everyone needs at least one K frame.

Consider the Kahr P45

Kahr Arms recently introduced a .45 ACP version of their 9mm and .40 poly framed pistols. I have a Kahr P9 that's my primary carry gun. Just FYI, I also have a Springfield Armory Loaded Champion .45, a SA custom IPSC Limited CLass.45, a Glock 23, Glock 26, an STI/Caspian Hicap .40, S&W 29, SW Highway Patrolman, Colt 1911, Colt .38 Official Police (one 4", one 2"), a Star BM 9mm. All are carried and shot regularly, but the P9 is the go to carry gun, with a KelTec 3AT in the pocket.

I'll second that recommendation. I just purchased a Kahr KP4543. Excellent size for carry. I've only put about 200 rounds through it so far, but I really like it. Kicks a bit more than my XD, but I was expecting that, due to the shorter barrel, and lighter weight.

You might at least look at a Taurus Millenium Pro. The older ones had some issues, but the new ones (past few years) have been perfectly fine. I always thought they were awfully nice little guns, and quite comfortable to boot. If your not down with that, I add my vote to the Kahr.

Buy reloading supplies and shoot the guns you already have.

+1 to what Vern said about the SP101. Very heavy trigger but also very comfy to shoot.

Money burning a hole in your pocket? Why ask a bunch of strangers what to buy in two weeks? Keep saving up and one day you will see something that you really, really like and will have the funds for it.

OOPS! I forgot to put the PT145 on my "have got list" I knew I was forgeting one, I'll edit that into the O.P.

Nope. I'm fortunate enough to have the money to buy whatever I decide I want. Hard work, long hours and good spending habits have seen to that. My gun hobby is one of the few things I "treat" myself with. I'm taking my first vaction in 2 years after next week and I want to spend it with my new purchase. This "bunch of strangers" has alot of knowledge and advice to share and I am interested in their opinions. If I'm not able to settle on something, the money will stay where it is and I'll spend alot of range time with what I have.

Thanks to everybody that's answered so far! :D

One thing I will recommend you not get is a scandium S&W in .357. For it's intended purpose, I am sure it's a delightful gun. For anything even approaching recreational shooting, it sucks giant balls. I literally have never been in as much pain from recoil as I have from that gun, and it is about 100% that I will never shoot another one by choice again. Really, that was about the most unpleasant shooting experience I have ever had.

Everything TimboKhan said is totally true.

I too would shoot that gun only if it were a life saving decision. (and hope to hell I stop the BG with the first shot)

Jim, would you rather he ask the same question at the gun store with a bunch of old blow hards, small on facts, big on opinions. Good people on this site, lots of experience, with a little B/S added for good measure. LOL Bill :)

Katana, my suggestion would be that if the funds aren't a problem look into one of the classic revolvers like a Python, Diamondback, Detective Special or a really nice Smith&Wesson. A shootable showpiece. Something that shoots really well and brings a smile to your face by just looking at it. There are so many choices in that catagory from snubs to magnums that I am sure you will spot something that will turn you on. Good Luck, Bill

It sure looks like you need to add a wheel gun to that collection. The SP101 would be a great choice in the 357. Tad heavy in my opinion for CCW. But I have carried mine, and I know a lot of others do on a daily basis. If you could live with a 38+p, the S&W 642 or 638 are a lot lighter and more comfortable to carry. I agree with others about the S&W scandium 357s. Very light for carry, but just awful to shoot. And you could "almost" get both a SP101 and a 642/638 for the cost of the scandium guns.

That's true, the S&W Airlite is up in the $900 range, totally ridiculous IMO. I was looking at them when I bought my J frame a few months back but passed on them in favor of the S&W’s Airweight .38. (S&W M638) I paid only $379, got a great light little revolver and can shoot +P ammo for a little extra punch. What’s not to like?

Sorry I offended, guys.
But I got past buying a gun just because it was time to buy a gun some years ago. I will ask for advice on selection, but I normally know what I want a gun FOR.

Actually, I am leaning toward the Ruger. I had one years ago when I first got my CCW. Sold it and got my G26 right after they came out. I like the thought of having a little wheelie around too.

Still there is something about the trigger and handling of the Model 19... ;)

I also think I'm going to read up on the Kahr. I'm not real familiar with them, but it does look interesting.

The Ruger SP101 beyond a shadow of a doubt.

You can do 38 specials and 357 obviously, which makes it a very easy gun to learn. (Instead of a small 45 where you get to pick between 45 and 45+P)

I have been eyeing up a Ruger SP101 with bobbed hammer for a long time. They're really easy to take apart and change the springs to make the pull a little smoother and lighter. (More like a S&W) But the single most worthwhile modification to a Ruger revolver is to round the trigger. The difference is phenomonal on my GP100. (I used a Dremel for the metal removal, followed by lots of hand filing to shape it. Sand it with 400 then 600 grit and its beautiful!)
