I'm thinking about getting into Cowboy Action Shooting.

So I need a lever gun in pistol caliber.
I'm thinking about getting a Marlin model 1894 Cowboy in .357

Anybody have any experience with them?

And if not the Marlin what other rifle would you recommend?

I shoot CAS with both short barrel (1895) and cowboy versions. The longer barrel cowboy version I use for long range shooting; it's in 38-55. I like Marlin levers for several reason which are practical: side eject, extremely easy to take down for cleaning, will feed anything that fits in the chamber, far less prone to jam than the various winchesters and clones I've seen shoot parts are interchangable and easily found, very accurate. For stage work rather than long distance shooting, I prefer the shorter barrel guns for lighter weight and ease of handling, but his is a personal preference. You will not go wrong with a Marlin.

Like mine!

I have one, and I greatly enjoy it. In fact, the term I have used before is: 'More fun than a new kitten.' Never had issues with any ammo in it, but then I've never tried wadcutters or semi-wadcutters either.

I had a little surpise when the sight shroud came off the barrel, but I actually like it better now.

I don't know how it would hold up to extensive use, like CAS practice, but since the 1894 is used for .41 and .44's, I can't imagine .357 wearing it out too much.

I know some people like the Winchesters, because the barrel is a bit shorter, but this Marlin is so handy, I know I don't notice the extra 2.5 inches.

I have a 1894 CBC (.38 only-24") and a 1894 CP (.357/.38-16"). I really love them both. I put an XS peep sight and scout rail on the CP, great combo. The CBC is stock.
I think the cowboy competition models are worth the extra money. They are smoother, faster and have light crisp triggers. The long (24") and heavy (octagon) barrel makes off-hand shooting a breeze.
My CBC will group less than 1-1/2" at 50 yards benched with most .38 loads.
Get one, you won't regret it.
