My father-in-law had some extra walnut boards and I am making a rifle rack. The kind where the rifles are horizontal on the wall, not the leaning against the rack type.

I was wondering generally how wide those types of rifle racks are? Could one of my fellow posters that has one of these types of racks measure the width for me so that I know what to aim for?

Thanks

I don't know that there's a "standard" width for them. I've seen some guys, with plenty of milsurp rifles, making longer racks for the longer-barreled rifles, and narrower racks for the "sporting" rifles. Seems to me most of them are set up to take the rifle at two points: one just behind the trigger-guard, ahead of the pistol-grip, and one at the forearm. If you measure the "average" length of your rifles between these points, that should give you the appropriate measurement for the rifle racks.

The El Cheapo one I hang my bows on is 26" wide. Outside to outside. Sides are 1/2" thick. My Enfields, M-1 Carbine and Garand fit on it nicely.

Mine is 21 inches inside to inside, 29 inches tall including a 2 1/2 inch tall ammo shelf.

I made one myself that I simply copied from another that we got at a yard sale or something. I took it apart and laid it over the boards I was making the new one from and traced the shape.

Well, I finished it. All told, its 23 inches wide.

Here are a couple of pictures with my longest and shortest rifle on it.

And here it is in it's proper place with all of my long guns.

That looks really nice.

I bought some felt from Home Depot, cut it in strips,

and glued it into the U shaped parts of the rack to protect from scratches.
