Hi folks,

Just received an ammo box containing 380 linked rounds of IMI made SS109.
The writing on the ammo box says:

380 cartridges 5.56mm/SS109
LINKED
LOT: 00203/C
CARTRIDGES FOR WEAPONS. 1.4S
INERT PROJECTILE UN 0012
G.W.: 7.8 KG N.W.: 4.5 KG
4A/Y15/S/ 01 /IL/IMI 94

The cartridges are headstamped:
IMI 01 or TZZ 01 with the NATO cross & circle.
I guess the ammo is made in 2001.
I made the magnet test on the bullets and confirm they have a steel insert meaning that they are SS109 bullets, they are also more pointed than the M193 but don't have the green paint on their tips.
Wondering why it says inert projectile on the box.

Can someone tell me if this ammo is good to shoot in an M4?
Also there's some kind of oil on them though not that much, do I need to remove the oil prior to shooting?

I got that box for $109, is that a reasonable price?

Thanks for your comments.

I believe 'inert ptojectile' indicates that it doesn't go BOOM when it hits. Non-explosive.

And the 20 round boxes of IMI I've seen arn't green tipped either.

And that sounds like a good price, especially as I've been unable to locate a good source for SS109 for awhile now.

Where did you get it?

the older twist rate rifles that do not handle 62 g bullets well. Counties like US still have older rifles still in use so we and other counties with old rifles in use, paint ss-109 tips green where they will not be used in the old rifles.

IMI ammo

Hi QuarterBoreGunner,

I live in Europe, actually the IMI SS109 box I bought was the last one they have in stock and they don't know if they could get more in the future.
I guess it's a bit more pricy here than in the States but you have to take into account that these rounds are linked, therefore you have to pay for the links too.
As this stuff is getting scarce, I'll save most of it 'till I can get hold of more boxes, in the time being I'll shoot some rounds to see how good they are.

Here I used to buy PMP ammo for $185 per 1000 rounds but they are no more available.
Right now they have loads of Sellier & Bellot .223REM in 140 round boxes which runs for $38 per box.
How much do you pay these in the US?
