Well guys, I was able to snag 5 cannisters of powder today from Powder Valley...which is a pretty good day for me (while I'm at work).

My complaint is simple: Just like the grocery store, the powder manufacturers have caught up with the times....what used to be a 16 ounce (1 pound) container for thirty plus dollars is now a 14 ounce container for (wait for it),,, thirty plus dollars!!!!

I am beyond aggravated for the way us reloaders are being taken advantage of.

I agree some of the bulky propellants are 14 OZ not a full pound in the container. Also some are available in 4 LB containers as well as 8 LB kegs and some are not available in that middle size. Unfortunately the prices went up as the first of the year some but not the prices seen on GB or such thankfully. As for PV they have always held the line and been the most consistant low cost vendor out there for as long as I have been using them.

If I were you I'd dump the powder into a pile and set it on fire. Video tape you doing this and send the video to the powder companies as a form of protest. That'll fix their wagon.

When DuPont still had IMR powders, 700-X was sold in half pound quantities in the same can that other DuPont powders were sold at one pound quantity.

Since Hodgdon aquired the IMR powders, 700-X is now sold at 14 ounces in the standard Hodgdon one pound container.

It is not a recent thing.

Edited to change Hornady to Hodgdon.

I don't expect any prices will "drop" when this real or contrived shortage is over.
I think of loading components as a commodity and the current prices more as inflation, not gouging.

Look at the price of a sheet of 7/16 4x8 OSB today, getting close to $50 at about $48 now.
I don't think that will be coming down anytime soon either.

It's kinda like the Carter years when your paycheck bought the most the day you cashed it.
jmo,
:(.

Hodgdon, not Hornady.

Where ya buying plywood???

I bought 5 sheets of 7/16 about 5 weeks ago for $49.99. The following week I needed 1 more sheet and they got me for $56.99, a 15% increase in 6 days. I checked Home Depot before I bought it and coulda saved $3.00 a sheet. Not worth the 3 hour drive round trip

I’m intrigued to know what the powder is! Is it one that we have known comes less than a pound, or is there an oldie that comes a little lighter now?

It was 4 cannisters of AA #5 and 1 of AA2230. I actually checked my old stock and found a container of both from 2016 that said they were a pound (and they actually were)....so 14 ounces is the new 'pound' (for at least these two).

Edit: that attributes to 168 less 9MM rounds per container.....

Wow, you're right, I bought AA #5 from powder valley about a month ago and had to check and my bottle says 1 lb. So this change is within the last month, :(

Picture of the bottles please. Web Site shows 16oz??

What powders? Some, like Trail Boss, are bulky powders and cannot fit a whole pound in a standard bottle.
Ramshot Competition for example. A standard volume bottle *could* hold up to 24 ounces (1-1/2lbs.) without losing an air-gap at the top of the bottle; but, it is sold in half-full bottles weighing 12 ounces. However, Competition is sold in 8lb bottles containing... 8lbs! It isn't a matter of volume or density so... Why? Only Hodgdons can answer...

You must have bought some Accurate No. 5 and No. 7 yesterday ... I did too along with a bunch of other stuff and I noticed the 14 oz thing at the time and even checked-it for weight description on some other sites.

I honestly cannot remember if Accurate had fully one pound quantities or not in the past. I ended-up buying all kegs anyway so it didn't matter in the end, I exceeded the 33 pd red line even, but I definitely noticed the 14 oz thing at the time.

You must have been trying to hit the 4 pound minimum and noticed that four bottles did not equal 4 pounds? I get it.

It's an anti-gun conspiracy! Anti-gunners, anti-reloaders, liberal Democrats are attacking every aspect of firearms. Gun powder containers will soon be regulated by capacity and background checks, smaller containers, and storage inspections/permits for every reloader. I read that paper targets are on the list with a specific limit on number of targets, size of targets, and colors will be regulated. Home bullet casters are going to need special Haz-Mat permits to deal with lead, plus OSHA mandated personal protection measures. Air rifles are slated to be on the list for background checks and a mandatory 10 waiting period, starting July 4th 2023. They are all against us and our sport...

J.K.!
