If you live in Connecticut and own an AK47 semi-auto clone in 7.62 x 39 caliber, you must read this!
I'd like to share some hard info that I've recieved from the State Police regarding the "registration" of all AK47 clones (Sar 1, Maadi, etc.,etc) here in Connecticut.
If you own an AK clone (only this family of rifles) that fires 7.62 x 39, (and only this caliber), you MUST register your clones or risk confiscation.......period. The woman I spoke to was very friendly and forthcoming with information but she did confirm that it was necessary. Fortunately, the whole process can be done via the mail. By contacting the State Police at the number below, you'll be sent a packet of info to fillout and return. And, yes, it does include the requirement of a thumbprint...however...you can do it yourself. Go figure. You can also travel to Middletown, in person.....WITHOUT the rifle.....and accomplish the same thing.
Here's who to call:
Department of Public Safety
Division of State Police, Special Licensing & Firearms Unit
1111 Country Club Road
Post Office Box 2794
Middletown, CT 06457-9294
860-685-8290
Now I don't like this any more than any of you but let's face it; we all try like hell to abide by the laws as they are foisted on us. While this particular "law" is a mess, Connecitcut, as a whole, is not extremely restrictive with it's gun laws unlike our neighbors to the North, Massachusetts, or to the West,New York. Maybe this mess will be resolved in the near future. Time will ultimately tell. In the meantime, however, suck it up and register your clone or risk confiscation and the D felony that's attached to it by making that call and getting the packet as I just did.
Finally, I did also query the person helping me about why this information was so vague and hard to find. It is not on the State Police website, either. I told her that I felt that many innocent owners will find themselves instant criminals as of October 1st. She did allude to the fact that there might be some additional time provided to extend the deadline beyond 10/1 but I would not count on it, especially with our current AG and legislature in power. There is a tremendous lack of conformity in the application of the current laws and NO communication to the general public about the regs. Heck...the regs aren't even in print! But, we're expected to "know" we have to do this. Go figure!
I've posted at other AK sites, too, and hope this will help you keep your possessions and stay legal. I'll bet, however, that the bad guys will ignore this....don't you?
