I have two lbs of 4064 and I would like to use it for my 223 using a 55 gr fmj bullet. Any tried and true load info.

Just about any reloading manual should have data. Check IMRs website. IMR-4064 will work in .223 but I never could get it to work as well as faster powders like IMR-3031,H-335, or AA-2460. Good luck.

I used it to great effect in .308. I switched to 748 only because the ball powder meters so much better in my Lyman 55 powder thrower.
4064 and 748 are both temp sensitive propellants. I am trading my ease and speed accurate powder throwing for temp stability in Varget.
I have many .625 moa groups with 4064. With 748 i am happy with 1 moa.
I never used 4064 in .223.

Tried and true data is in your manual. A load that shoots well out of one rifle won't necessarily out of another. You must work up the load.

IMR 4064 in 223 Rem.

IMR 4064 will be a compressed load that can be a pain. Other wise it goes bang, but i could not make a super accurate loading using it. Good for plinking. Tried with the 3 bullets on the right side in a Savage Axis bolt gun. 224Bullets.jpg

Tried it years ago. Using IMR 4064 with Sierra 55 gr FMJBT bullets. Load was between 24.0 and 25.5 grains. Never had much luck with it and I assumed, as others mentioned, IMR 4064 is just too slow for good accurate loadings in 223 Remington. I had better luck with IMR 4198 and eventually moved on to powders like VV N130 and N133 and H 335. Anyway, if you want to try it by all means have at it but don't expect too much. The Hodgdon Powder website provides some load data for IMR 4064 in 223 Remington with some 55 grain bullets.

My loads were based on the Sierra 50th Anniversary rifle reloading manual and tried in a custom Remington 700 series bolt gun with a 1:12 twist.

Thanks for the replies. Guess I won't be setting records but since I have the powder and a whole s-pot of pulled bullets and brass I'll just make up a bunch of blasting ammo. I have an old SP-1 that eats anything. Thanks again.

I worked up some loads for 223 with the powder I could get at the time.... 24.2 grn IMR 4064 under a VMax 55 was sub MOA -a called flyer out of my Ruger SR556.
