I bought a box of .308 cal 174 gr cast lead, flat nosed. gaschecked , lubricated bullets at a funshow. I have some Varget and some IMR4320. Which powder would be a better choice to use? Would 30.0 grains IMR 4320 be a safe starting point?
I`ve checked several charts which recommend that load for Sierra 170 gr. flat nosed bullets. But I think they`re referring to jacketed bullets. Would it be okay for gas checked cast bullets?

Depends on the rifle you are shooting, 308 is pretty small for cast in a 30-30, mine takes 311 or I get leading and bad performance. Some factory cast lube is terrible, LLA seems to work OK. Varget will work fine, start at the low end of any j-word loading manual. Don't try to push them too fast. You can also try 8-10 gr unique - it's fun.
