Imr 4320

I am about to start loading 223 for the first time. It will be for an ar. I was at the local supply store and couldn't find any powders that were listed in my manual. The guy behind the counter said imr 4320 is good. Can anyone verify that? Also any load data would be helpful. I plan on loading with 55gr fmj bullets.

First off, welcome to THR ! To answer your question, in my reload book, 9th Edition Hornady, it doesn't show IMR 4320 powder at all for the .223 round. I realize, my rifle is a bolt Remington, different cat. I've used IMR 4198, 4895, and IMR 3031 without any problems, used for about 20 years now. There will be others that load for these rifles you are using, they'll probably have a better idea than I, so don't take my words as gospel. I use IMR 4320 in a .250 savage, good powder too, but again, a different cat to reload for. There are many other powders that can be used, don't think this particular powder is what you're after, others might disagree with me.

Hodgdon's online data shows IMR-4320 for all bullet weights. Be warned, however, that 4320 is one of those powders that "should" work very well in this cartridge but doesn't have a good reputation for that.

I tried it with mediocre performance. I also read an article called The Mouse Gun that Roared (or something like that) where the author had similar results with this powder.

I've used it recently with 55g bullets. It works ok. They went bang every time. I did not shoot enough to determine it's accuracy potential in my rifle though. From reading the loading info, 55g is as light a bullet as you would want to use with 4320.
