Today I have a chance to get a 8# jug of imr 4320 for dirt cheap. Hodgdon shows loads for it with a 55gr bullet but I am unfamiliar on how this is running in a semi auto. I have been reloading for a while but only pistol. I have everything to start running .223 including powder but this opportunity came up to get this super cheap.

Would be used for plinking and general use. Would it be waste of a $100?

I've used several IMR powders over the years in .223, but not 4320. Still Hodgdon's website shows loads between about 23.5 grains and 26.1 grains for 55 grain bullets that yield around 3,000 fps and generate less pressure than similarly performing loads with other powders. If you reload enough to justify an 8 pound jug of powder, it sounds like a bargain.

IMR 4320 works very well in the .223 Remington in a gas gun. It is short grained and gives good powder drops from a powder hopper. It does fill the case up and works better with the 55 and + grain weight bullets. It's burning speed is about like Varget and Reloder 15, just at the end of useable speed for the 223. If the price of the powder is well below what you would normally pay, I would buy it.
