I have come across an unopened can of IMR 4895 at a garage sale. It came with a lot of other stuff I puchased. It is old and has DuPont written on the can. Would you consider this powder safe to load?

Unopened cans, properly stored, will keep for decades. It keeps in finished form - loaded ammo - just fine if it's sealed and stored well.

Open it and smell it. What scent does it give off?

A year ago I bought three one-pound cans of DuPont IMR 4227. If the cans show no sign of rust or any other type of corrosion, you should be good to go. As others mentioned, open and smell, if it smells sweet and kind of like ether alcohol, you are most likely just fine with it. When you open it, pour a bunch out and see what it looks like. If the kernals are uniform, you are most likely good to go. Be careful of any sparks when pouring any large amounts (static electricity comes to mind).

I had a 20+ year hiatus from shooting and reloading. My IMR cans say Dupont and my Unique says Herculese. I'm still shooting the IMR off.

I would have no problem using an unopened can of old powder. I currently have opened containers of surplus IMR4895 powder that are decades old, and all is fine.
