In a perfect world, what rifle setup would you want to equip our troops with?

The opinion from the couch (he's home on leave, and been there and done that) is that the M4/AR is great in combat situations. The thing most needed is high rate of fire, heavier caliber, supporting fire weapons, on the spot.

AND immediate artillery and airborne direct fire support makes the biggest difference when the chips are down.

Again, this is coming from a guy with feet on the ground where it is happening

+1

I haven't met a Marine that hated the M16, but probably because they are more trained being riflemen than your basic Army/AF/Navy soldier.

2 of my buddies are currently deployed. One Marine and one AF. No complaints.

Another acquaintance I know in the Army doesn't even want to shoot his M4... weird.

until you have been in combat, seen your buddy next to you head explode, been either (in my case)) jungle warfare or whatever scenario.......this is a real stupid question. carbine, combat rifle, full length combat rifle, pistol grenade launcher.....you wont know till you need it......war is hell.

M4 for standard issue - Replace RCO with a different optic though
1911 pistol in 45ACP
AR platform 260Rem Standard sniper work
M-60 or 240G for Squad auto weapon. Also in .260Rem.

Most infantry needs covered by this. The 7.62 is not a favorite of mine. I would get rid of it in a heartbeat compared to other rounds.
