the cold weather/early sunset has caused much of my free time to be spent doing other things then shooting. i would really like to convert my empty, cinderblock basement into a sort of improvised in-door range. first off...it is totally blocked, and not under the house (its under a new, unfinished addition to the house, so it faces north south, 20 ft or so from under the house we live in). it will be ventelated just fine (no plyboard on some of the addition above, and a ceiling fan wired up as well). so really the only thing that is stopping me is figuring out a safe backdrop so that rounds wouldnt hit the cinderblock walls.

all i plan to shoot is .22 revolvers and semi-auto hand guns down there as well. i went out this morning and did some testing on phone books. 1 large phone book easily stops .22 rounds at 10 yds (the distance i will be shooting at downstairs, give or take a few feet) when put up against a hard backing. i took an old refrigerator down there, took off the door and filled it with boxes of phone books, magazines, and the such, and backed them w/ plywood. i cant think of a single way that a bullet could escape if i got it into the boxes. im really not conserned about richochets, becuase i would actually have to miss the 6' tall, 3' wide refrigerator to do so.

but when i showed all this to my new wife, she wasnt so sure. i then ended up putting 4 pieces of 3/8" plyboard (4' x 8', 2 thick) behind my target just in case. is there anything im overlooking here? i think it seems plenty safe as long as i do my part.

so what im asking is, does this sound like a safe set up for plinking in the basement. provided i can hit the big hole in front of me, the .22 bullet would have to pass thru 1.5 ft of phone books, magazines, cardboard, plywood, a steel fridge from the 50's (which ive shot before w/ a .22 rifle and did not penetrate it, just dentded it) and then proceed to hit almost 1" of plyboard to find its way into any cement.

did i think this out clearly? is there anything im missing? im not trying to be super dangerous, i just want to extend my shooting time on my days off.

i remember going over to my great-grandfathers house in kansas when i was young, he had a huge old house w/ a firing range downstairs. the previous owner had put a 1 lane bowling lane in down there, and since grandpa didnt bowl, he turned it into a really nice indoor range.

im really psyched about this and i hope that it doesnt sound like a rediculous idea to all who read. any thing that i could have overlooked would be helpful. thanks again guys, you guys always are able to help me out.

I'm no expert, but this just sounds like a major accident waiting to happen

While it sounds like a fun project, it would probably cost a fortune to do it correctly and may not be within your zoning rights.

Take the money it's going to cost and find yourself a nice indoor range to join.

I'd only use Aquilla Super Colibri .22LR ($15/brick) downstairs and stay completely away from centerfire pistols indoors for what you are describing. You'll also need plenty of ventillation since .22 rounds make lots of lead fumes.

No-Go

I would avoid this plan; far too many red flags for a very short .22 range.

I test fire my suppressed pistols into old phonebooks my garage just for kicks sometimes, but it's not something I make a habit of. For your use, a bullet trap made out of mild steel would be a lot better than an old fridge stuffed with junk. Set the steel at an angle so bullets are deflected into a sand pit.

For anything more than test firing, the others are correct. Ventilation is your big problem. For extended shooting you will need a lot of air flow.

perhaps i didnt think this out as well as i planned. i agree that some sort of bullet trap would be preferred for safety reasons. air flow shouldnt be a problem tho, almost 2400 sq ft, and plenty of fan power to pump the air out. anyways, thanks for the responses and input, i guess maybe this was a misguided plan...lol. i just thought it would be really cool to get some extra shooting in. maybe ill just convert the barn instead:) .

There are 22 bullet traps but you still get led dust and splatter, as well as led from the primer.

You can shoot parafine bullets that you can reload even without equipment - you only need to buy primers. You still get air-borne led from the primers, so your ventilation is better be good.

Better get a decent airgun/rifle.

There are still a few places with quaint legal issues, say, about 500 feet from residence, no discharge inside residence, etc. How are your neighbors????

Despite the naysayers, such a system will work for years. How do I know? I had a big box in my basement filled with newspaper that i shot into for maybe 15 years. About two or three years into the deal i painted the floor to make it earlier to clean. I was amazed at how much dirt showed up after shooting. When I finally pulled the box out, I got maybe 35 pounds of lead out of the papers. three 3 pound coffee cans full. I had a air to air heat exchanger in the basement that would give fresh air. .22 lr standard velocity rounds worked find. I had just under 20 yards of clear shooting length and spent hours down there. The new house lets me shoot out the back window.

well, i pbly went against conventional wisdiom and tried my "range" out. i only shot .22 shorts, and it seemed to work just fine. didnt even make a mess. w/ 2 fans running, and the window open air flow didnt seem to be a problem. i doubt their are any laws prohibiting me from doing this too, as i the nearest house is about 3/4 of a mile away, in the other direction...lol. i wish their was a nearby indoor range, but i think this will end up working just fine for me. i opened up the box i was shooting at, and none of the rounds made it thru a 1/3rd of a jumbo phonebook, i i figure i could fire plenty of rounds in their w/o incident. i think ill just keep swapping out the "target box" from time to time.
