Let's take Russian military type 7.62 x 39 mm ammunition, for instance.
As memory serves me, from when last I ordered some, within the last couple of years, one could have DELIVERED, a case (1000 rounds) of this stuff, and get change from a hundred dollar bill. Recently, in ShotgunNews, what I take to be essentially the same ammunition is offered at $160/1000 rounds PLUS shipping, in round numbers.
The ammunition is still steel cased, Berdan primed (non-reloadable), and while it goes BANG when the trigger is pulled, is not to be described as MATCH GRADE AMMUNITION. Of course the rifles chambered for this cartridge are not usually MATCH rifles either.
One hears a lot about rising comodity prices, but has the price of mild steel doubled, I somehow doubt it. How much legitimate increase has there been in smokeless powder. How much actual increase has there been in lead prices. Does any of the above mentioned add up to a doubling of prices, somehow I do not really think so.
Of course, possibly increased military demand might come into play here, but has that demand increased that much? Might it be that what civilian shooters are seeing these days is plain and simple another example of corporate greed? It matters not whether the greedy corporations are American, Russian or anything else.
Input is solicited.
