In the ammunition distribution chain, are games being played?

Let's take Russian military type 7.62 x 39 mm ammunition, for instance.

As memory serves me, from when last I ordered some, within the last couple of years, one could have DELIVERED, a case (1000 rounds) of this stuff, and get change from a hundred dollar bill. Recently, in ShotgunNews, what I take to be essentially the same ammunition is offered at $160/1000 rounds PLUS shipping, in round numbers.

The ammunition is still steel cased, Berdan primed (non-reloadable), and while it goes BANG when the trigger is pulled, is not to be described as MATCH GRADE AMMUNITION. Of course the rifles chambered for this cartridge are not usually MATCH rifles either.

One hears a lot about rising comodity prices, but has the price of mild steel doubled, I somehow doubt it. How much legitimate increase has there been in smokeless powder. How much actual increase has there been in lead prices. Does any of the above mentioned add up to a doubling of prices, somehow I do not really think so.

Of course, possibly increased military demand might come into play here, but has that demand increased that much? Might it be that what civilian shooters are seeing these days is plain and simple another example of corporate greed? It matters not whether the greedy corporations are American, Russian or anything else.

Input is solicited.

Dunno

Was bumming around Wal-Mart this aft, strolled by the ammo counter to see what they had in stock. I noticed the WW 115gr FMJ practice stuff in 9mm had gone from $ 5.99 to almost $10 / 50 in less than a year. WW .38 spl 125 gr JHP's that you once could get for $ 9/ 50 was now almost $ 13 / 50.

I have to think a big chunk of that was transportation costs escalating Jan-July of this year. But will we now see it decline? I wonder :scrutiny:

academy has 9mm Monarch 115gr fmj that I use for the range at
5.86 /50 in the Green box.
Never had any jams or feed problems.

I agree - 2 years ago, gas was $1.05. Now I am all happy that is went under $2.30 for the first time in a long time. I started reloading 7.62x39mm instead.:D More fun, anyway.

Zinc and copper, a big part of the content of our cartridges, have gone up a lot. Transportation is more expensive. And, according to Cheaper Than Dirt in their August catalog, prices have jumped because demand is much higher. Instability around the world has people buying and keeping more ammunition, which drives up the zinc and copper prices further, which drives up the ammo prices...:banghead:

I hated economics in college and it hasn't gotten any better. Just more personal.

Capitalism...Russiansand the distributors of the Russian ammo testing the true worth of their ammo?

Can call it greed, it fits...but it's not out of line with every other product. We either pay it, or we don't...still our choice.
