To Indiana Voters;

I've been hearing a lot about Mitch Daniels for Governor, so I headed off to his site to see what the buzz is about. I've read through some of it, however can't seem to find anything that shows his RKBA stance.

Mitch began his public service career working in various capacities for Dick Lugar during his days as Mayor of Indianapolis. Mitch followed Lugar to the United States Senate, serving as chief of staff during Lugar’s first eight years in Washington.

That worries me. We all know how Richard Luger votes on gun issues... :(

President Bush nicknamed Mitch “The Blade†for his determination to protect taxpayers against excessive government spending.

That sounds good; albeit we'll probably never see it happen.

Indiana can lead the way in innovative approaches that give Hoosiers greater control over their health care, and encourage them to take more responsibility for their health.

Sounds good...

And government can implement strategies to promote healthy lifestyles.

Don't really care for that... It's my choice to be healthy or not.

In the end, when government has done all it can to improve the state’s health outlook, everyone must take charge of promoting their own health.

Wow, I smell personal responsability! But where does he stand on guns?
*grumble*

Thoughts?

Nick

I was wondering the same thing so I asked him:

I have read through your website and reviewed your position on the economy, jobs, education, etc. and believe I am clear on that.

One by product of the issues you mention that is not addressed is crime. In my community, we are seeing higher incidence of drugs and the related crimes. This is no longer a big city problem but affects all of Indiana. I have these questions:

What can Mitch Daniels do about crime and drugs in Indiana?

Will new laws help us, or should we advocate stricter enforcement of existing laws?

Do you think guns are part of the problem? And if so, what solutions does Mitch Daniels propose?

I'll let everyone know what he says.

I got a reply from one of his campaign people today:

Thank you for your questions regarding crime and Mitch's stance on the
issue. Mitch believes that we should enforce current laws and do so with a
force that will make the criminals understand that they are being punished,
but Mitch will also be open to new crime laws when the need arises to
enhance public safety.

Mitch is pro-2nd amendment but realizes guns have their time and place, as
well as, responsible ownership. He believes that guns are the right for a
law abiding Hoosier to own and be responsible with, but if not, they are
rightly punished.

Mitch is currently gaining more knowledge on drugs from the experts in the
field and law enforcement officials. He is aware that Indiana has a drug
issue, especially with the rise of meth making and use. He is going to have
a drug policy but is currently getting key information from those in the
know to help him shape his ideas.

Thank you for your questions.

That sounds promising. What do you guys think?

I think it could be said of any politician that they firmly support the RKBA until such time as it would be to their benefit not to!:banghead:

My take on it was similar.

He seems to be saying that he is pro, but leaves himself an out. He would support new laws for the "public safety".

We've heard that one before.

In the rating system employed by the Pro 2A groups, he's probably a "C" right now. Could vote with us, but could go against us if the political wind blows that way.

I'm afraid it may be a lesser of two evils choice for us Hoosiers this year.

Copy of my email to him earlier this year and the reply I received. He is a good talker, could probably sell ice to an Eskimo so take as you see it. I would like to see someone actually step up and say what they really think in plain old language that anyone could understand.

Dear Steve,

Thank you for your note. I believe Mitch's position is straight forward. He firmly believes in an individuals right to bear arms and is willing to defend that right.

I hope this information is helpful.

Thanks again for your note.

Subject: Stance

Hello,

I have been following Mr. Daniels progress of late, as we draw closer to the point where decisions are made I would like a direct, honest answer to Mr. Daniels position on Second Amendment Rights. I have corresponded with a number of politicians regarding this subject and so far have had nothing but wishy washy responses that do nothing but tell me that the person has no intention of expressing their true views lest it lead to discussion. I have no interest in further dealings with anyone who does not have the intestinal fortitude to stand behind their convictions.

I am a gun owner and a believer in many issues. The gun owner is often accused of being a single issue voter, nothing could be further from the truth, in fact, those people tend to be the ones that hold those things that used to be known as "true values" to heart. In Mr. Daniels bio and in his stated objectives he purports to hold those same values and wants to protect and preserve them, I wonder how far that goes. Is he willing to touch this politically hot potato?

I am looking for someone to help preserve the basic tenents of our society, the things this nation was so proudly founded on.

I would appreciate an honest, candid response.

Thank you for your time,

Steve *****

Mitch is a pretty good guy. I have worked pretty closely with his campaign and while I was pulling for Eric Miller back in the Primary I think Mitch will do a good job. I wish he would spend some more time down here in Southern Indiana but hey, the man is pretty busy :)
(Note that I am friends with a lot of people working directly for his campaign and I work for the party so I may be kinda bias)
