I've always relied completely on Federal 230gr. Hydra-Shoks. I've shot them into water tanks, and they've always consistently expanded. I've deprimed their cases and have noticed their primer holes are larger than most. IMHO this means more "juice" is likely to initiate the powder.

However.

I have recently purchased a "micro" (3 in. barrel) .45, and was concerned about velocity out of such a short barrel. So I redid the tests (and added a chronometer)

I figured I'd have to step up to a lighter 165gr. +P bullet to get reliable expansion.

Nope. The 230's still expanded. Remarkably, I discovered that while I did get higher velocities out of the 165 gr. Hydra-Shoks, 200 gr. Hornady's had similar velocities. In my book, heavier is better, so I'm now carrying 200gr. +P Hornady's. (Just personal opinion, but I've found that the Remington Golden Sabres had an embarrassingly low velocity out of the 3", so I used the rest of them as plinking ammo)

I've heard good things about DPX's too, but I can't offer a first hand opinion on those as I've never personally shot them.
