Inaccurate Savage .308Win fixes?

Do you have another scope you can try, just in case something in the scope is broken?

I second the suggestion to make sure the barrel is floated.

How abut adding a pressure point on the stock to the barrel, like you would for Mosin Nagant. Can't hurt to try at 4moa. On the savage site they are big on floating the tang. I would try a pressure point with some paper or cork just to see.

A few suggestions:
1. If you haven't done so, drive a tight-fitting lead slug through the bore to see whether there are any tight/loose spots there. It should be tightest near the muzzle. If there are serious bulges near the muzzle, you'll need a new barrel, or cut it off at a tight spot.
2. If you haven't tried another scope, do so.
3. If you take the action out of the stock, try putting a SMALL amount of compressible material like chewing gum under the action, but with a covering that will keep it from sticking to the metal. Tighten the screws fully, then remove them and take out the action. If the gum isn't very thin, the action isn't bottoming out. Could be a recoil shield hitting the bottom, which it should not, or the magazine keeping the action up.

Good luck, and try one "cure" at a time, if possible.

Whatever that thing circled in red is, it does not look good. Looks like an issue no different than a dinged crown.

I would send that photo to Savage and tell them about your accuracy issues and see what they say.

"...4 MOA is down right dismal..." Not if it's consistent. Perfectly suitable for a deer rifle("Hog Hunter" is marketing). A Savage 11 is not a target rifle. It's a hunting rifle. No need for a hunting rifle to be 1 MOA accurate.

Why on God's green earth would anyone tell someone to be happy with a 4 MOA rifle that should be at least 4 times better than that???

Question for the OP.

Was the rifle new to you and has it been this bad from day 1?

Regardless, a call to Savage is free and they would want this rifle back to fix it rather than have a customer unhappy and sharing his frustrations on social media. Give them a chance.

I agree nobody should be told to just be happy with a 4 MOA bolt gun these days.

I am suspicious of the scope. If you put a different scope on it and can still do no better, then I'd send the gun back to Savage and let them work it out.

Where did you find this info? I would like to find "fig. 23" spoken of in these instructions.

Thanks,
Russellc

Do you mean how the little stainless tab attaches to the mag before insertion into the stock?
If so i can take mine apart and grab a picture for you.

Are these the QD style or the two piece clamp? I am suspicious of the scope mounts. There might be a little play or maybe slightly torquing the scope inducing some random movement. If the rifle has iron sights, have you tried shooting with them instead of the scope?

The rings are the two piece clamp type. Torqued to 25in-lb.

I will give the gum trick a try. Thanks.

I would have to swap scopes just for a try.

I have swapped scopes in the past. I initially installed a SWFA, and I thought that low-priced scope might be the problem. I pulled a Leupold fixed 4 from one of my other rifles and got similar results.

Thanks, but the whole pdf is now provided. I am about to buy a MDT chassis- I will eventually need 2, one for my 12FV .223 and one for my 12FV .308. I thought I would try the first one on both guns until a second one is afforded.

This is good info for reassembly I likely would have missed.

I certainly hope the new .308 shoots better than the subject of this thread...otherwise back to savage it goes for repair. Assuming it isnt me of course!

At that point, if it were mine, that gun would have been going back to Savage.

As would a trip back to Savage. It's been suggested numerous times here and us the obvious answer. I wouldnt do anymore than has been done until they fix it.

Once fixed, then throw barrels, scopes, rings and so forth at it.
