Springfield waypoint model 2020 advice

I just purchased a new Springfield waypoint model 2020 in 6.5 prc to finish off my deer season here in Texas after my savage barrel crown got wrecked somehow and when I say it was a splurge item i mean I splurged. I paid 600 for my savage and this thing was 2599.00 so I expected it to be a much better quality rifle. Well I’m on the fence if it’s much better? It sure does look cool with its modern stock and carbon fiber barrel with vertical grip and it feels better when shooting but all that good is overshadowed by the bad.

The bolt is grinding/sliding aggressively against the the next shell in the magazine causing extreme scarring on brass and causing lots of brass shaving to enter the magazine and pretty much everywhere. The bolt has brass transfer where it slides against the case and there is a lot of brass shaving around the firing pin area. I have some pictures I’ll load. My savage 300 wm which I don’t think I ever cleaned didn’t have a speck of brass anywhere especially on the bolt and it had been the smoothest action I’ve ever cycled,

When single fed I can put a bullet in the same hole or at least I could with the first 3 shots from new box of precision hunter ammo but accuracy goes out the window when mag fed. Very inconsistent.
I’m thinking it has to do with the burr created when the bolt digs into the brass when chambering the next round from magazine and that burr not letting the case seat properly. I might be reaching but You have to really have to snap the bolt handle to close it. It doesn’t do that when single fed With an empty mag.
I just got this thing 2 days after Christmas this year so it’s basically brand new.

Please yall tell me what yall would do. I love the feel of the gun but for 2600 dollars the mechanics should be much better designed.

It’s a mag issue and a well known problem with with the 6.5 PRC chambered Waypoints. That’s why I’ve never bought a Waypoint in 6.5 PRC. It’s also an issue with the 300 Win Mag Waypoints and I fixed that by buying a new Magpul mag for $35. Should I have to buy a new mag to make a $2400 rifle work correctly? No, but I did and it was money well spent. I think your best option for a new mag in 6.5 PRC is Hawkins Precision. They are expensive, but they work. Sorry to hear of your troubles, but I have found my Waypoints to be worth sticking with.

First off, Welcome to THR. Please feel free to drop a comment in the New Member Introduction thread.

Second, what those ^^^ people said. Especially for US$2600 (which is more than I spent on my first three cars combined).

Intellectually, this is probably an example of an argument for "controlled feed" in bolt action rifles. Of course, that intellectual discussion does not get you a working rifles, and that's priority one here.

Awesome. Thank yall for replying. I do not mind purchasing a new mag and I feel like that could be a good option vs sending off the rifle and waiting to see what kind of damage takes place during transit to and from. People that do a quality job and respect others property is getting harder and harder to come by these days so if there is possibly an easy fix that costs a little that would be less of a headache at least for me.

So on top of buying what I need to use a different mag I’ll also give Springfield a call and let them know just to see what they say.

When I get this figured out whether it gets fixed or Springfield/Gun Shop issues a refund I’ll update the situation. I hope Springfield will stand behind their product but a lot of people have reported the opposite but I will reserve judgement until I find out for myself. I really do not want a refund though.

Did your oem mag sound like a 1940’s baby rattler? Mine does that also.

You shouldn't need anything other than the new magazine, and hopefully that will fix the issue you are having.

I don't have a Waypoint but all of my metal AI mags have sounded like that when they are empty.

I had more issues with my rifle. I was trying to get through this last weekend of rifle season and low and behold I’m walking back to the 4 wheeler after sitting in my blind from 4 that morning to 6:30 tonight and one of the qd flush mount bushings freaking pulled out and speared my barrel into the mud. Luckily i wasn’t on a hard rock road or I would’ve been really pissed but I have no doubt it got knocked off sight. First deer season I haven’t finished off bc of a rifle issue. I thought I was paying more for a better product, boy I was wrong. I’m just kicking my self in the ass for not doing more research vs falling in love with the dang thing when I put my hands on it. It’s a shame bc it feels great in my hands and very comfortable to shoot minus the brass/bolt interference and the subpar accuracy. Here’s some pics of the brass that one of y’all asked for and the aftermath of the crap show this evening.

Well dang. Sorry you are having troubles. The one and only reason I do t have a waypoint is because it does t come in left hand. I fell in love with it that hard when I handled one. Now I'm kind of glad I've not picked one up. The other gun I've fallen for is the bergara b14 crest. But again, no lefty.

Forget buying anything.

That rifle needs to go back.
It needs to be looked at by a smith and actually finished…

I may have excused the issue had I purchased it knowing the problem. I have done that with cheaper things, and expensive ones.
But now that the stud fell out too, and I dropped my brand new rifle in the mud, and onto the scope…
A well written, and courteous, letter needs to be included in it, with all of the details and your expected outcome. Tell them what you want and expected, nicely of course.

And perhaps share a link to this thread, since you have been very level headed so far. How they handle this issue will, and should, be known publicly.

I have bought a very cheap auto shotgun I knew came with correct parts, but assembled incorrectly. I have also purchased a $3k pistol that I knew came with junk magazines.
I may have been coaxed to buy aftermarket magazines, before it fell apart, dropping it.

But that’s just my take on it. I hope it works out okay, I bet it will.
