I know I should honor the inauguration of a new leader of the free world and our great nation with reverence and respect. So I did. I am a team player for Team USA-so I celebrated the inauguration by purchasing a myself a new Glock while he was making the inaugural address. I figured I owed the President the respect of making a wise financial decision in this time of economic downturn.

I pick up a new Model 31 / 357 Sig. It has been nearly twenty year since I had my first Glock-a Model 19. I haven't kept up with them much and I have a few questions I was hoping the TGO posse could help me out with:

1. What do I have to install/change out to shoot .40 S&W?
2. What do I have to install/change out to shoot 9mm?
3. Is there is difference between the .40 and .357 magazines?
4. Any recommended sources for magazines and 357 Sig ammo?

Thanks,
ETB

Another thing. If you do not want to use the .40 barrel for any kind of self defense application, you should check out lone wolfs ported barrels. I wish I had thought of that when I bought the .40 barrel for my G31. It would help with the recoil on my range trips.

Earnest T.

I'm not a Glock owner (never shot one) but I do applaud your sincere patriotism and your positive action in desiring to aid the economy. The best that I could do was to buy two more boxes of Blazer Brass .45 during the festivities. Wish that I could have done more but I haven't received my "spread the wealth" check nor my "bail out" money yet. As soon as I receive either, I may just become a Glock owner for the first time!

I am not saying that from a legal point of view, but a possible lack of night vision point of view, if the weapon had to be fired in a dark environment.

Also if you have to fire the pistol from below eye level you'll catch the gases in your face.

I've shot ported Glocks at night, and they actually are not that bad. I felt no affect on my night vision. Although my greatest concern about self defense, remember you have to be able to shoot, move, and COMMUNICATE. The db level increase of a ported barrel seems to put things that were already dangerous in a tight hall way over the level. It could be the difference between hearing "behind you" after you pulled a couple of rounds off. Just remember this is a personal observation, and I have sensitive hearing. No I don't have noise meter and could never tell you the exact scientific difference.

They make most decent SD ammo with powders that do not make much flash. I wouldn't worry about the flash being much of a problem, but like GRIZ said, you really don't want to shoot a ported gun from retention position without eyewear. JMHO.

Ernest T., I know it is mostly personal preference, but if I were going to tweak a new Glock, the first thing I would do is change out the plastic sights. Most stay in fine, but I've seen enough get knocked loose that I'd prefer to have some steel ones fitted.

Congrats, and post some pics ;)

Are the OEM Glock adjustable sights poly or steel? Do they require a taller front sight?
I'm not sure about the adjustable ones. I only have experience with the plastic fixed ones.

So you honored Team-USA and the US economy by buying an Austrian made gun during the inauguration... Interesting.

The honorable American thing to do might have been to purchase an American made Smith & Wesson M&P. The .357 and .40 barrels are drop in replaceable.

you done good

I like the 357 Sig caliber and find it to be quite accurate in addition to its impressive energy. I also love Glocks, though I prefer the mid sized guns, which is why I own both the G23 and the G32. I bought an OEM barrel in 40 S&W for the G32 because I have a lot more 40 S&W on hand. If you get an OEM barrel from Glock get an extra reoil spring and guide rod at the same time, it never hurts to have a spare on hand. Also, by getting the OEM barrel you should have no reservations about carrying it this way, I don't. Your mags will work with 40 S&W.

Ammo for the 357 Sig is not cheap anywhere though I have noticed that S&B has some reasonably priced practice ammo. Fiocchi loads XTP bullets in their defensive ammo at about 2/3rds the cost of Hornady with the same bullets. Also there are a lot more loads available for the 40 than for the Sig so you may find yourself carrying it with the 40 barrel installed for that reason. I just picked up a bunch of Federal LE ammo at cabellas for $24/50 and a bunch of Mag Tech for $9/20. Winchester white box is still around $27/100 at Wal-mart.

By the way if you are not going to reload and you decide on getting a 40 barrel there really is no sense in getting anything other than an OEM barrel. If you do reload or have access to cheap lead reloads than an after market barrel like the Lone Wolf makes good sense.

damn, I must be darn lucky, I have a Kahr PM9 about as small as they come. and I had it Mag-na-ported. I have 18,350 flawless rounds through it. No blindness, no hearing loss, no cloths flaming, nite stuff, Guarantee you, you cannot tell where the flame is coming from. Before I ever ported it, the flame in the eveing was immense coming out the front of the barrel. To many IMO theories on shooting a ported gun for defense. Now put it under you nose and yup probably will get some real **** up ur nose, My second shot is right there waiting for me to pull that trigger. Never shot a more pleasant gun, course I have shot Mag-na-ported guns since 1974, so what do I know..

And My PM9 is my 24/7 carry and has been for over 2 years..
