Indiana carry in bars???

A friend of mine was recently asked to leave a bar because someone noticed he was carrying. He was minding his own business and had only had three beers in 2 hours.

The manager/bartender told him it was illegal to carry a gun in a bar. I do not believe this is correct. He nor I will EVER go to this bar ever again but I want to know if legaly this is correct. My friend has had carry permits for years.

I have been to this place a few times and have NEVER seen any signs prohibiting firearm carry.

You know, I am an advocate to carry a gun pretty much everywhere and I have myself carried my gun into bars, BUT on those occasions I didn't even have so much as 1 beer. Guns and alcohol don't mix, period. What happens if you buddy happened to get into a shooting on his way home from the bar, would you really like to deal with the fact that you just had been drinking? Bad juju man.

Lets see lawyers from shooting someone after having a beer or two or needing a gun and not having one. Ymmv, but I certainly know which sounds like the less desireable outcome to me. I guess it depends on how much you dislike lawyers though.

I would mail the owners of the establishment a letter citing the applicable indiana code which you should probably find easily enough on packing.org If they're intelligent people perhaps they'll extend an apology and offer you a free order of wings on your next visit. I wouldn't camp by the mailbox but you never know.

I have been reading at packing.org and can find no mention of carrying in bar being illegal. The only thing I found was some mention of not being able to carry at schools. Is there any other place I might find information on state carry laws?

It's legal to carry concealed in a bar. Obviously, he wasn't carrying concealed or he wouldnt' have been asked to leave.

Concealment is not required in Indiana. You cannot carry a handgun on or about your person without a license to carry handguns. Open carry is legal with an LTCH, similar to TN and MN.

What is an LTCH?

He and I both have regular state permits. He wasn't carrying open. I think it was more like his shirt tale or jacket rode up a little high and someone got a look at a partially concealed pistol.

Bar carry is legal in Indiana.

Just don't bar hop into IN's neighboring states where it's not.....

What if you were a little loopy and your aim or your judgement were off and you wound up killing an innocent person? I'd rather risk being killed myself than risk killing an innocent person, and I'd rather be sober and armed than drunk and armed or drunk and disarmed.

'Course, I'm 41 now. If given the same three choices as a 19-year-old, I might have had a more "youthful" answer
