I'm a new shooter who's been going to an indoor range for a few weeks. This place charges per person, rather than per shooting lane. That is, two people sharing the same lane for an hour pay the same total fee as if they were each using their own lane for an hour. It doesn't seem right. Of course, the two could walk in separately, pretend they don't know each other, and each get their own lane, but this doesn't work if they are a parent supervising a minor.

Is this how most ranges do it? Thanks!

The indoor range I most frequently go to has a per person fee, if I show up alone I get my own lane, if I show up with my bro or GF and there are 2 lanes open we each get our own lane. If it's crowded and we are 2 we have to share... but I guess thats better than waiting.

The $15 per shooter range fee is the same either way

Honestly, Dave, I've seen both and in about equal numbers.

Talking about indoor ranges now . . .

Normally the smaller the range, in my experience, the more likely they are to charge per shooter rather than per lane. Larger ranges with more lanes and bays seem to (but not always) stick more with charging per lane.

Virtually every outdoor range I've shot at has charged per shooter.

Jeff

One local public range uses a cross scheme. They charge some amount for the first person per hour with a reduced rate for other folks they share the lane with (there may be a limit to that number).

At the one I go to, for non members it is per person. Get a membership and it is a flat fee per month for unlimited use. If you bring a friend who is not a member, there are guest passes (six per year) for that. I've never used any of those. ;)

Not sure I would be proud of never bringing any new shooters to the range...

As far as orig question. It really depends on range (and often RO) I have had where I have a new shooter and we each pay for a hr. (lots of breaks) This is using the (classroom) area for dry fire (without noise) as well as going over a variety of firearm types. EVERY time I have gone to RO/incharge of $$ to pay for another hr they refuse. "you hardly shot for 20 minutes of your time and we are not busy anyway" They KNOW letting stuff slide will increase chances they will get a SAFE shooter who will come back often. The noisy/gang banger wanna-be who come in group and fire (as close to ) bursts sometimes (I KID YOU NOT) holding gun SIDEWAYS I have actually seen this at a public range. How I kept from laughing I don't know. (maybe bullet striks everywhere but target helped)
Basicly you should READ the range rules before you step up to table. Spend a few minutes looking over operation while hanging up your jacket/look over gear/guns for sale. (I did say LOOK not touch?)
After you fire 40 rds is NOT time to be told "We don't allow mag, FMJ, Exposed lead, rapid fire, more then 10 rds per mag" (one or all of above.)
IF there is a rule that bothers/hinders your practice....FOLLOW it for a while. Show you are safe. If range is fairly quiet go talk to RO and ask.
The range I used to go to had a "NO shooting from holster" rule. There were only 4 other shooters and after a hr I asked RO about it/I wanted part of my practice from holster. Basicly he said. "I noticed you looked around before shooting even when range was called hot, kept muzzle downrange, etc Go right ahead" When another shooter commented about it I just said I had permission. I asked EVERY time the place was not crowded.
I am sure if I just started shooting from holster (or breaking other range rules) I would NOT have been allowed to do it.

All the indoor places I've been to have been per person, per hour.
Outdoor are either free, or per person per day.

Here is how mine breaks down.

Tuesday-Saturday $15 for members
Sunday/Monday- $10 For Members
Members can bring a guest for an additional $10 if you share a lane
NON-Members get charged $35/visit

No time limits

Also at my range its not uncommon if the range is not busy for a second lane to be used for loading and prepping guns as long as your not shooting from it.

the 2 i go to are $15 per person per day and $12 per person per day.... none of this per hour crap...

as for range rules... well i frequent a public range too, so its pretty lax there

The indoor range where I shoot charges by the lane, by the hour. I can't remember if he adds on another buck or two for a second person in the same lane. I pay for an annual membership -- if I bring a gues, it's another couple of bucks for the guest if he/she is sharing my lane.

inside, i swipe da card 24/7. outside, till a 1\2 hour after sunset,,,,,,, guest(s) my responsibility, $180 avg per yr ( cause of F'n legal fees). alas, cost of doing business now-a-days. still a steal~ 15 min drive.

Oddly.. I have no idea. The range I go to is $13 per hour for me, but I can't ever find anyone that wants to go along with me, so I'm actually not sure if they'd charge to add a person to the same lane.

The really nice thing about that range though is that once they know you they let you do pretty much whatever the heck the want without the need of an RO or any silly rules (like Ive seen some other places) whatsoever.

The range I'm a member of charges by the lane-hour (or annual members can bring a guest for free), but another local range charges by the person. I prefer my range due to the fact that they allow rifle calibers and have a 100m range, all indoors.

Burnsville Pistol Range has got quite the setup for pricing.

First they have a flat $10 for 30 minutes, then they have "the formula"

Unlimited time = $5 per person per gun.
So, one shooter and his one gun = $10, one shooter, and 2 guns = $15, two shooters and one gun = $15 as well. You get the picture

It has changed slightly since then, now it is $12 for one person AND one gun, +$6 for each additional person(limit 2) +$ 4for each additional gun
