A new year comes with new ideas..! Or Time to proceed with old ones!

I have come to the point where I want to put together a Indoor Shooting Range and would like to know the criteria involved and if anyone here knows, or has experience in a indoor range.

Contacts Regarding Equipment?

Regulations Involved W/ Indoor range?

Does The BATF Get Involved?

Any info would be appreciated... I have always wanted to do one and would like it to include Rifle range also. This is the beginning of putting it into action, what I learn here will probably go in to business plan for implementation.

Base budget about $400,000 for a pistol range. Twice that for a rifle range 100 yards long.

Weeelll.... Actually I was kinda expecting around 200k so Im off by about 100% for both.

Is it the legal aspects of it that run the cost up?

I may just build a personal one!
 
There are a lot of factors. Too many for me to want to go into tonight on my keyboard.


Think about it and if you're serious. If so, we'll talk and I'll put you in touch with some people. I really don't want to spend my time discussing this to find out it's a "I like to someday" dream. But if you're committed I'll help start you along the path.
 
Thanks BullFrogken....And I will do some thinking as well as to not waste time. It is something I have wanted and am reaching the age where Im gonna do something, however you point out a cost of double what I expected.

Hard to undo bad decisions during the 2nd half of your life!

Tomcat, There is a rather high failure rate with commercial ranges. Usually caused by poor management. So a smart thing for you to do would be to survey the field or active and inactive ranges. You may find one in bankruptcy with equipment and fixtures that can be bought at good price.
 
Thanks for all the info, it was something that I have wanted, but more study has shown high cost, low sucess, regulations....geez!

Would be easier to just open a small gun/pawn shop!

Most business are capital intensive. Figure on not getting any profit for a couple of years. Also, you have to be able to judge value well to get into pawnbroking...people will be bringing you all manner of items, tools, etc, not to mention guns of all types and conditions.
 
I service an indoor gun range. It must have a 100 percent outside air and be kept at a negative pressure. If you live in colder climates heating the air in winter to 65 degrees dicharge will cost you $1100 a month. The air exhausted must be filtered to remove lead and the other gunpowder related contaminates to EPA standards. Filter replacement will cost $3200 every 2400 hours of operation , depending on shooting volume.This range with backstop installed was around the $100,000 and is a 25 yarder.

The NRA has a Range Development Course that they hold several times throughout the year for people who want to construct shooting ranges (both public and private). They also have a very detailed guide on just about everything you need to know from legal aspects to construction, etc. Even if you don't take the course, the guide would be very beneficial for you to read!
 
The NRA has a range construction handbook you can purchase from them (I believe it's $19.00). It covers best practices, what surveys and permits you'll probably need to get, etc. If you can go through all that and not be scared off, or decide it's too much of a PITA then it's time to look at funding.

What about a members only outdoor club range type thing.....
would that be easier?
and much cheaper I would assume so, see theirs this sand pit that will be, well out of sand in say 5-10 years and I want to turn it in to a range a big one.:D
 
Unless you are in an urban area a well baffled 50yd outdoor range with a covered, deep three sided staging area would be easier and cheaper. Do you have a strong desire to shoot indoor?

Google national shooting sports foundation or the NRA and search for range information.
 
I have a full basement and my pastor says I could set up something in my basement. He jokingly said I could use an automatic garage door opener as a target carrage :]
