I am going to attend the Indy 1500 Gun & Knife Show in January. I want to buy some ammo there. What is the best day, in your experience, to shop for ammo? Friday, Saturday, or Sunday? Thanks for your advice.

For ammo, I don't think it's as important which day you go. From my experience, there's usually a good supply for the weekend. The bigger question is finding what you want for a decent price (considering you forked over some money to walk through the doors in the first place!).

But if it's specialty ammo, go on the first day and make sure you get some. They're probably less likely to bring lots of the speciality stuff. If it's military surplus or similar "common" ammo, try Sunday and hope for some decent deals from suppliers who don't want to truck it all back. Of course, you run the risk of then having sold out.

This is just an opinion.

On a side note: last time we went to the Indy 1500, our normal supplier (side wall with long table next to the concession stand) had nothing but Wolf .223 ammo and no 5.45x39 at all. Didn't matter which day for those calibers.

Oh, I guess I should clarify my last statement. He had other calibers, lots of 'em. But we specifically wanted .223 and 5.45x39. The only .223 he had was Wolf (which we didn't want) and no 5.45 so speak of at all.

He's usually a good source, but not that day.

sure would be nice if a local shooting club scheduled a match for the weekends of the the Indy 1500. an action pistol match would make the trip more "justifiable". :)

I will be at the Indy 1500, stop by. The table will be to the right as you come in the door along that front wall. Look for a bright blue table cloth and an 8' yellow banner above it. I will be up there with RBCD ammo if that is the kind you are looking for.

I'd like to go, but I was disapointed with the show back in October/November (whenever it was). It seemed like prices were higher than the gunstore I frequent. I'm nearly ready to buy another handgun, but I'm hesistant about doing so at a show.

Anyways, any tips for a newbie on negotiating a good deal on a gun at the show? I want a NIB fullsize stainless HK USP 9mm, but I just don't know that I'll be able to find a better deal than the $670 Galyans wants for the same gun (HE finish, though).

In general, Bob Cheek at Plainfield Shooting Supplies has the best prices on brand new stuff.

He's just east of the Galyans in Plainfield.

Midwest is good, but when buying away from the show, they're a LONG drive away from Indianapolis residents.

Keislers down just north of Louisville has an excellent selection and I'm pretty sure is the largest (as far as stock goes) shop in the state but... they're a weird place to shop. Sometimes they'll come down to what I know is roughly 10% over cost and sometimes they just won't budge an inch when every other dealer in the state is 10% below their price.

And I called the other day to get a price on an item and the guy actually said that they don't quote prices on items that they don't stock. I asked how I would go about ordering something they don't stock and he just restated that they don't quote prices on non-stock items.

I'll second that on Bob Cheek and Plainfield Shooting Supplies. Good people. I wish that I had a gun store as good where I'm living now. I miss that store and Popguns, as well as Galyans (great prices on guns considering that they are a large retailer...or maybe because of it... ). Les Wolfe up in Lafayette always treated me well, as did Chris, who owned the store before him. I forget his last name.

Ah, the joys of a larger community...:(

Yeah, I remember now. I didn't have a lot of dealings with him before he sold out.

Midwest Gun Exchange has a lot of stuff but their prices are nowhere near as good as Bob Cheek's. Never bought anything from them but used their tables a lot to handle stuff that I would then order from someone else at a lower price. Yes, awfully bad of me, but I'm not made of money. Bidness is bidness.

Kirk, I really wish that you hadn't brought www.badgerbadgerbadger.com to my attention.:D

How is Friday at the show? Are there a lot of dealers there on Friday? I live in SW Michigan, and wonder if it worth the trip on a Friday.
