Who makes an inexpensive black powder rifle? My friend has a percussion cap .54 hawken rifle with a synthetic stock. i think he only paid about 150 for it. Im looking for something along those lines.

I like the Hawken style and like the percussion cap over flintlock or shotgun primers.

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive rifle? Its really just something to have fun with out at the shooting range. It doesnt have to be pretty. and if i can hit a paper plate at 100 yards I'll be happy.

Go to a Rendezvous. You can find used factory made smokepoles at a good price.

Try pawn shops. Get the yellow pages and call them all up. $100 should get you a Hawken.

Or try Gunbroker.com. NO FFL needed (check your local laws) for BP.

Good luck and let us know how your hunt goes!

You'd be hard pressed to find a new traditional style MuzzleLoader for under $200.00 since most every company out there is shoving those inline types all over the place but a few weeks ago I did see a used Springfield Hawken rifle .50 caliber for around $90.00 at the local Pawn shop here in Fredericksburg.

The Lyman Deerstalker or Trade Rifle is about as inexpensive as it gets for a new rifle. Mind you, I wouldn't be too concerned about buying used. It takes a lot of abuse to damage a modern firearm of any kind. Usually not cleaning a BP rifle properly.

Look for a good used one. In last week I got a Traditions Ky rifle flintlock It needs a ram rod . 45 bucks A hawkins with a scope 50 and a new Traditions 50 Deer ? 50cal for 125 . First 2 dealer doesn't like BP unless inline Last from a dealer selling out to retire.

Right now, I think the best deal going is an H&A underhammer from Blue Grouse Black Powder. Really neat canoe gun!

I'm partial to traditional smokepoles over the inlines. I have bought new, and used over the years; either way you can usually find some good deals at gun shows, gunstores, and online.

Thanks, Articap! I was planning on contacting them at the end of Oct for the canoe gun. Too bad.
