I'm thinking about starting an inexpensive collection of C&R guns. I've already started with a couple milsurp rifles, but would like my next purchases to be pistols.

There is a novelty to the Nagant revolver, but I'm more interested in your thoughts on the C&R eligible CZs. Specifically the CZ52, CZ82, and maybe the CZ27s. I'm also seeing the FEG PA63 in Shotgun News.

What ever I start with, I want it to be a dependable shooter and teh price is nudging me more toward the 52. I also like the velocities I read about with the 52.

Whatchathink?

The best C&R handgun on the market right now in my opinion is the CZ-82. Superb ergonomics, great double-action pull, poygonal rifeling and target grade accuracy. Very dependable also if you don't use Wolf ammo.

The CZ-52 is all that you've heard it is and dependable also, I just didn't like the trigger pull so I sold mine. I guess I've got used to high end target grade triggers.

Another C&R I'd recommend is an East German Makarov. A bit pricier than the others however.

I agree with the above two posters. CZ82 gets the nod. Easy to shoot and get ammo or parts for. More user friendly.
PA 63s have hard trigger pulls and high power ammo, and yes it is out there, 9x18, should be avoided at all costs. There are those who like them and have done their own minor gunsmithing on the PA63s. So it can be done. www.makarov.com and the forum board are good sources of info.

A Google search brought up quite a few places to go to about the PA63. Too many to place here.

When I get my C&R liscense in the mail, I will celebrate by getting a CZ82. From all reports the CZ82 is the standard by which all 9x18 pistols are judged. I've seen and handled the CZ-52 and would probably get one one day, but they're much bigger than the maks, PA63s, P64s and Maks. I just finished a trigger spring replacement on my P64, and the DA pull is nice now. I don't like the feel of the PA63, and will probably not get one b/c it's a biter. Check out the CZ forum. The 82 is on the 83 page, they are the civilian and military version and there's lots of good info there.

Your contradicting yourself. The CZ82 is chambered in 9mm Mak.....

Just got a 52 and it's a hoot. AIM had them for $130 and a case of 1224 rounds for $110.

Get a CZ-82 from www.aimsurplus.com. The last shipment of them is very nice. It's a great shooting gun, comfortable with good sights. The only better C&R handgun deal I ever got was my Sistema.

Another fun C&R available now is the CZ-52. I don't like the ergonomics of it and it has terrible sights, but it is a blast to shoot! Surplus ammo is cheap for it right now, but it is corrosive so clean it up with soap and water (or Windex, generic equiv, etc).

If you come across a CZ50, buy one. They are fun little guns that shoot 32ACP (the Europeans call it 7.65mm). It's sort of a Walther PP type pistol. IMO, it's better than the Walther in some ways.

How does the CZ82 compare with the modern CZs such as the CZ75 compact in ergonomics?
The CZ82 is a modern pistol. :) In fact, it's almost identical to the CZ83 that is still manufactured and sold. The only differences are in finish and minor changes to some small internal parts.

It has very good ergonomics. As far as I can tell, the sights are exactly the same as those on my CZ75 (except the CZ-82 has a stripe on the front sight, where the '75 has a dot). I'd bet money that they are interchangeable. The mag catch is right at the thumb where it's suppose to be. The mags drop free. It has ambidextrous controls. These things are unheard of in C&R guns. Even the trigger is very good. and the two I shot were very accurate.

My only gripe is the grips. While comfortable, they have a swell right at the mag release, requiring a change of grip to eject the mag. However, I'm sure the reason is to prevent an accidental mag release.

CZ-82 is the best deal going if you want something that you can actually use for a self-defense pistol. The PA-63 isn't a C&R eligible pistol, and the DA pull on that first shot is really annoying. Other good "deals": East German Makarov, CZ-52, 1895 Nagant Revolver (strictly for a safe keeper, not really suitable for self-defense)

Let me rephrase that. There are high pressure and heavy weight 9x18 rounds out there that should be avoided by owners of PA63s and P64s. Makarovs and the CZs can handle these rounds. 94-95 gr. bullets are the heaviest bullets to use in the P64s and PA63s.

I would highly recommend a Makarov. As previously posted, they are definately more pricey than a CZ-52 but worth it. You can find them in the low $300s if you look around and they are excellent little guns.

I actually have several Makarovs but I believe only the E. German and maybe the Russian military (not the commercial version) are C&R eligible. Some of the non-C&R eligible Maks are less expensive but the fit of the German Maks is generally superior.

Nagants are expensive to shoot, but the strangest darn design, which I kinda like. CZ52's are a blast to shoot in the .30 Tok (haven't tried the 9x19), but can be a bear if they want to--slide stop, disassembly can be tricky sometimes). Still waiting to try out a CZ82.

I have a PA63 and it is a great little gun.

It needed some breaking in though. I had to run a couple hundred rounds of ammo throgh the two mags and get the gun to function smoothly

The gun is well made, compact, looks good, and reliable. It's a good low cost alternative to those wondernines out there.

I received my CZ 82 from AIM yesterday, ex. cond. The pistol was unissued. You can't beat the price! Fits my hand nicely!

I think this is the time to jump on the CZ 82. Reminds me of the prevalence of makarovs 4 years ago and SKSs awhile back. This is just the right time for that gun.
