Inexpensive rifle/scope and accuracy

This is for all the folks out there who think a gun/scope combination has to be $600+ in order to hit anything.

I took it to my local range and had it shot in at 100yds, he fired 2 shots

The Savages have always been known as accurate rifles, but 2 shots does not make a group. Always nice to get it centered in two shots also, now just keep practising and show us some groups after you get used to it.

I use a Banner 1.5-4.5 on my .50 Beowulf and it generally works fine. Where you really see the difference is hunting in poor light, better glass and coatings do make a difference. Most of my scopes now are Burris FFII's, but I do have others, Nikon Monarchs and Buckmasters, Bushnell Elite 3200's. The most expensive scopes don't seem to add enough, for me, to be worth the money, but I definately see the difference moving up to the mid-range scopes.

Personally, I wouldn't always trust my marksmanship enough to say one bullet represents where the rifle was pointed. Each to his own though.

How Long Will That Bushnell Hold Center ???

A one shot group just shows that you can hit the target and tells absouletely NOTHING about the rifle's accuracy.

The loosest most worn out 30-30 will ALWAYS shoot a .308" one shot group as long as the paper is hit.


How come you didn't shoot more? The shooter could have "pulled" the rifle the right way when the trigger broke and your ZERO could actually be 8" to the right

Mine's held center for 8 years now on a Savage 10FP. This is a 4-12X50mm AO I bought when I bought the rifle in 1997 or 1998, hell I can't remember now.

I've got an Elite 3200 Handgun scope on my 7X57 VZ24 Scout Rifle that's held zero for several months now and after riding in the back seat of my Ford for 2 weeks with a GI blanket over it.

Bushnell banner scopes may be a lot of things but fragile isn't one of them. I've put banners through some serious abuse and have yet to break one.

About 40 years ago I did something similar. I was in college and took my Win Mod 70 featherweight , 30-06, with a 4x Leupold in Weaver pivot mounts out

I fired one shot, centered the x in the 10 ring, packed up and went home. Lucky , yes, but that rifle with the load I was using shot groups in the sub 3/4" range. Now with my eyes, nerves and the fact that I do not shoot as much 1 1/2 to 2" is good.
