I just saw a Remington 721 bolt action in .30-06 that appeared to be in excellent condition, price below $300. Any information on these rifles would be appreciated. I know they were discontinued in 1961 or so.

Thanks

Mark

though a plain jane, the 721 is an excellent rifle. my 725 can shoot 100 yd 1 hole groups. tell the seller it's ugly and offer 200. ;)

the 721 was the immediate predecessor to the 700.

it is so close the 700 it isn't even funny.

i just picked up a 721 to salt the action away for a custom build later on. the 721 isn't a real hot seller, and i would jump on anything below $250, but wouldn't go above $250.

I used a 721 for years. They are light and accurate but very plain. A good buy at $200 to $250. There was a transition model made from 1958 on with a lighter bbl. The original had 24" the T model had a 22". If you can get one with the "all purpose stock" it's even better, it had a higher comb. The low comb stock kicks hard.
Good Luck

I have owned a Remington 721 in .30-06 for over 50 years now. Bought it in 1953, sent it off to the west coast to have the bolt converted to left-hand action, stuck a Weaver K4 scope on top and still use it to this day.

For quite a few years it was my only centerfire rifle. Consequently, I learned to shoot it well. Most jacketed bullets would shoot into an inch or less at 100 yards.

After the southpaw conversion, the bolt worked through the action like a piece of well-greased glass, much like that of a Krag.

I never did have the stock changed, and today that old rifle has the oddity of having two bolt notches, one on each side of the gun!

If you've got the dough, buy the rifle. I sure don't think you'll be disappointed. She may not be the prettiest girl on the block, but she'll sure be faithful.

Thank you for your responses. It sounds like just the rifle I'm looking for. The "plainness" is what cought my eye in the first place.
The dealer will hold this one for me for a long time, so it may be worth the extra price. I'll look at it again Tuesday and if it's in good shape it will be my birthday present ( in August).

Thanks again.

Mark

I had been looking at a new 700ADL.

I saw an old Remington 721 in a pawn shop today; it was priced at about $250, including an old 4x Weaver scope. Looked to be pretty decent--and the stock looks like walnut. Did the 721's have walnut stocks?

Think it's a "buy"?

i wouldn't pay any premium for that scope... it may or may not be good, hard to say. those old weavers seem to hold zero rather well, but like to develop internal fogging problems.

offer $200, and pay up to $225... anything beyond that, i'd walk, but only you know how bad you need that rifle.
