My wife just inherited one of her grandfathers revolvers. It is a 38 S&W Special CTG. S/N:736472 stamped onto butt plate. It holds 6 rounds and has a swinging cylinder. The pistol is double action with fixed sights. A notch cut out of the top of the frame. It is blued. The top of the barrel says "Patent Feb 6, 06 Sep 14, 09 Dec 29,14"
What year was this pistol manufactured?

Sounds like an M&P produced in (I'd guess) '40 or '41.

(The only other 6-shot hand ejector in .38 Spl with fixed sights is the .38/44 Heavy Duty, and their serial numbers don't go up that high. :) )

Jeff...

Tamara has it nailed I think. Do you have the capability of taking and posting a picture? That would help ensure a complete ID.

You may want to consider spending $30 and sending a history request to Roy Jinks at S&W. That could help identify the origin of your revolver. Nice to know information if it is an heirloom.

Thanks for the replies

Thanks for the quick replies. My wife is just tickeled to have this little revolver. I think we'll end up paying the $30 for a letter from S&W this way she can find out the history involved. Thanks again
