Some people don't like the Mini and others do. If you like it then that's all there is too it. If you want info on ACS go over to perfectunion.com. They have a forum board just for the mini and accurizing same. I think you will get some straight answers as to what a mini can be made to do.

Having had a day to think about it. I really do like the mini and own several. I really do like the AR and own several as well. So without prejudice here is a statement to think about. ARS will charge you around 1000 to really trick out that mini. Now, if I had an extra 1,000 just laying around I could buy a really good long range bolt gun Steyr, Rem 700, etc. Even would go a long way toward an MIA. It's gonna depend on what you want the gun to do. Shooting at running yotes, jack rabbits, etc. great choice. Cartridge is underpowered for big game. Now you have a 1,000 worth of add on's and a 500 dollar rifle. 1,500 tied up and you want to do what? I saw one of the ARS guns at a show recently, wanted 1600 for it. Almost bought it and then realized that the mini is what it is. A hundred yard ranch rifle. It can be tinkered with at home and produce acceptable accuracy. If you want a serious smoke pole then think about what you want it to do and buy the right rifle for the right job. Don't try to make a honda civic into a nascar. It wasn't designed for it.

NEW Mini-14

I just bought a NEW mini-14 and it's very accurate. Ruger re-tooled the entire line and closed production for 18 months. New Mini's serial #'s 580- have a much heavier barrel than older ones. I have compared with older ones and it's significantly thicker. A guy with a AR-15 tried it and thought it was lighter, and more accurate.

I like the mini-14. It is as tough as a rifle can be and now is much more accurate. Get one and you won't be disappointed.

You can dress up a Mini to look and act like an AR with cluster rails, different stocks and hi cap mags.

Happy shooting.:)

My learning curve is still steep upward but leveling.

I got onto this ASI mini idea because many members are saying the round is abundant, cheaper and works to stop 2 legged predators if TSHTF. I know it will be about 1600-1700 by the time I'm done and I would have a good .223 with what they call a guaranteed sub MOA. On the other hand I could get a Sprinfield socom 2 or m1A loaded with cluster for 1800-1900 out the door without a 12 week wait. Amo is pricey and less abundant. Talked to Springfield and they say I should expect 3MOA which seems high. keep the opinions rolling.

Also g5reality I'm interested in MOA you are getting out of the box. I've been hearing good things about the new 580 numbered series.

Blancoman: I know about the dressed up Honda thing. Thats why I've looked into the M1A, but if you go the ASI route and they do what they say, it really isn't the Honda/Mini14 anymore. With all the custom things they do. the only thing remaining is the action

new mini14 target.

Yes, I have read about it, but not seen them at any dealers yet. I think retail is 990.00. I'm calling Ruger today to see what the say I could expect as far as MOA on the target and the regular new ones.

The target model mini has a thumbhole stock which isn't legal in cali on a rifle that uses detachable mags. Maybe they are going to come out with one that has a standard stock. Mark

ARS. in South Carolina is pleasant and professional. I know nothing about the new mini target that ruger has out. I have heard others say that accuracy is phenominal but no one will say what that equates to. I personally can attest that ARS can make you a gun that will absolutely shoot sub moa. Fast shooting, low recoil, quick target acquisition. What's not to like? Lets talk about moa for a second. Three moa at 100 equates to 6 inches at two hundred. 9 at three hundred, 12 at 400 and 15 at 500 yds. Any battlefield rifle that will hit minute of man at 500 yds will work fine for SHTF situation. compare the ft.lbs on the 5.56mm vs the 308 at 500 yds and tell me which one stops the fight first. Personally, I think you need both. I would feel real uncomfortable if I was in SHTF and only had a 223 and I guess I would feel the same if I only had 308. There are other threads here about what SHTF means in different situations. You have to decide what you want that battle rifle to do. Your thread was originally about accuracy systems. So the answer is, I have shot an ARS mini and was incredibly impressed. That is why I almost bought the one I saw at the show. If you decide to go that route then they are a great choice. A lot of the guys here use Gun Doc. I have not had the pleasure of shooting one of their weapons but I hear good things. In fact, I am sure that you could get accurate info here on these boards about any custom shop and their abilities. I wish you luck on your purchase decision

Talked to ruger Friday. What a waste of time.

I don't know why the lady even answers the phone at NH ruger. She didn't have any knowledge of the mini 14 58xx series or new target. All she could say was that with the mini 14 you could expect a 3-1/2MOA and did not know what you should expect on the new target model. She had no idea about if they would have a target model with a Cali. compliant stock and really did not care about much of anything but that she gets paid to answer the phone. I'm an employer and I am sooo sick of people that don't take any pride in what they do or that they don't want to know everything about the product that is providing for there paycheck. Give me an enthusiastic emplyee and even if they aren't that bright I pay them more.

Blancoman

Thanks for your opinion. I have been talking to ASI (Carl) He is very personable/knowledgable/helpful. We are putting together a great firearm that will be very accurate and yes expensive. With all the neat technolegy I can't spend money and not have it as good as I can get. 5-10yrs down the road I don't like to say if only I paid another $$$$ I could have had...... I'll prob. pick up a SA socom 2 or M1A loaded with cluster but that will need to wait( I'm also waiting on order for a Sig 226 elite when they come to Cali.) I want the .223 first since ammo is more affordable to stock up on and shoot. Once I'm rigged and stocked I'll get the M1A

g5reality: impresive

thats very impresive. Is this scoped? Are you getting this repetedly even when the barell is heated up? I may have to buy one in the box before going to ASI

You might consider getting Carl at ASI to change the Mini into a 6.5 Grendel. Then you will have a rifle that is perfectly adequate for deer (and other like sized critters) out to farther away than the .308 does. Ammo is available from Wolf (check with Cabalas or Grendel sites) this month. You'd end up with a rifle that hits harder then a .308 and recoils like a Mini.

I have a hard time justifying that much money for a Mini.

I actually really like mini's, and I have a hard time justifying some of their premium packages. For example, their "ultra match, air gauged" package is $789.00. I am sure they do a fine job, and I am sure that the gun would be returned as awesome as advertised. However, when you factor in the four or five hundred bucks you paid for the gun to begin with, you end up with an eleven or twelve hundred dollar gun. My Bushmaster Varminter, which is more accurate than I will ever be, cost $1195.00. I guess what I am saying is that I just don't see the value, unless you are an extreme fan of the mini.

Granted, I am only looking at their premium package, but even the "conservative" package ends up being in the neighborhood of an $850.00 gun when it is all said and done.

hm2 clark,

Could you point me to ballistics tables that compare the 6.5 Grendel and .308 Winchester with similar bullets? Thanks.

Car Knocker, I am computer illiterate and don't yet know how to cut and paste.(My wife promises to teach me.) The Wikipedia web site under 6.5 Grendel compares the 5.56, 6.5 Grendel and .308 ballistics. For in depth discussion, go to the Alexander Arms or 6.5 web sites.... The short answer is that the 6.5 bullet has a higher ballistic coefficient and hence stays supersonic longer (an farther). When bullets fall through the sound barrier, they tumble losing accuracy and velocity.

hm2 clark,

Thanks for the leads. Unfortunately, the ballistics charts I was able to find only compare the 6.5 Grendel against the 7.62 NATO, rather than against the higher-pressure .308 Winchester. The charts also show the Grendel using the Lapua Scenar bullet in comparison to the standard NATO bullets used in the 7.62 NATO. I believe a more useful comparison would be to have both the Grendel and the .308 going head-to-head using the Scenar bullets. Are you aware of any such comparison?

Car Knocker, you got me on that one. I am not technical minded enough to know (or care about) the difference between .308 and 7.62 NATO; I also use 5.56 and .223 interchangeably. To me it seems a distinction that makes no difference. My point was about the possibility of turning a Mini into an M1a. And as to using one particular bullets ballistics in one particular caliber and then trying to find that particular bullets ballistics in another particular caliber may be reasonable-but I'm the kind of guy who looks at the price of bullets, buys a few hounded and then shoots them for fun, not to prove a point. I don't know how much difference there is between the Sencar and the NATO bullet. That seems to be the kind of thing a person might do a college thesis on.

The ballistics tables that compare NATO ammo to the Grendel using premium, low-drag, high BC bullets are comparing apples to oranges. If the Grendel is going to use the Lapua Scenar bullets, then the .308 (or whatever other caliber is being compared) should be using Lapua Scenar bullets also so that there is a fair comparison of capabilities - a level playing field, so to speak.

Of course your right. Also gotta use the same length barrels. And shoot at the same altitude. And with the same ambient temperature. It would probably be best if we use the same kind of steel in the barrels. And chambers made by the same manufacturer. And don't forget to use the same kind of rifling in the barrel......And then when you have done all that work comparing the two rounds, your left with a Mini that compares with a 7.62 NATO-but its in a Mini!
