Info on Front Sight

It kind of looks like it was put there to compensate for shooting high and to make sure it didn't fall off.
Must have been successful, 'cause it's still there.
If it weren't nothing that ugly would still be there. :)

It's to keep the barrel steady, it can provide an aerodynamic advantage if the win is blowing on the shooter from behind. ;)

"Back in the day" many shooters preferred the look of long ramps and the slight extra weight they offered. A periodical of the time showed how to make a ramp and front sight by cutting down a Williams rifle ramp to make a front sight integral with the ramp. The King Gun Sight Company also offered ramps, some with recessed mirrors to add light to the sight blade. This was carried so far as to offer full length ribs, either solid or ventilated.

Hard to find a feature that hasn't already been tried.
