Bought a used XTR Featherweight in 243. Push feed. It's in excellent condition. Red butt pad with Winchester logo instead of USRA logo. Serial G1578xxx.

I think was made in 81 from what I have researched. Anyone know any more info or value?

I can't tell you the value, but I can tell you it should be a great rifle. I love all the Model 70s except maybe the very last low-end ones that USRA made that sold at Walmart. My .243 youth model from the same era as yours shoots real well with handloads and has excellent finish quality and deep gloss bluing. I would like to get a featherweight stock for mine with an adult LOP.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to shooting it and seeing how it shoots.

Nice Rifle.

Value depends on condition. Minty ones go for $700-$800. My Firearms book list Good $450, Very Good $625 and Excellent $725. That echos what I have seen on Gun Broker.

Excellent rifle. Congratulations.

Those were made from 1980 or 81 through the early 90's, about 12 years or so. Some of the best made Winchesters in my opinion. USRA, United States Repeating Arms Company, bought the Winchester name in 1979 or 1980 and made a good effort to improve quality over the failing Winchester company. At the time the XTR's were the top end guns in each model line.

While they are excellent guns, they can often be purchased at bargain prices. The pre-64's get a lot of attention and many of the guns made from 1964 up until the XTR's came out were of spotty quality. In 1992 or 1993 Winchester brought back the pre-64 design with the "Classic" line of rifles which feature CRF again. Made from 1992-2006 these get a lot of attention too. The XTR's were dropped and replaced by the Classics as the top end guns. Winchester continued to make PF rifles right up to 2006, but they were all cheaper budget rifles. The XTR's were only made for a few years and don't get a lot of attention because they are pushfeed actions rather than the more desirable controlled round feed.

Personally I prefer the CRF Classics, but have had a few XTR's and they are a very good rifle. All I've seen are well made and Winchester used very good wood on most of them.

Most sell between $400-$500. Which is a lot of gun for the money. I suppose some in pristine condition might sell for the $700-$800 price, but I've not seen one go for that much.
