Hi good folks,
I just picked up a really nice older 12 gauge pump for $100. No dings, no bad marks, no rust, nice wood, and no wear. It has a 26" ventilated barrel, adjustable choke at end of barrel, and it says on barrel; Ted Williams model 200 12GA., 23/4 CHAM. Sears Roebuck & Co.
Any info will greatly be appreciated on this shotgun. I'm a rookie shotgunner and have some questions.........If I want to shoot slugs or OObuck do I adjust the choke to "cyl. bore"? Also what does full, Imp. cyl, and Mod mean on the choke? Thanks, John

I'll take a stab at this here . I think Sears sold the Ted Williams line of guns and the model you have may be of Winchester manufacturing (same as thier 1200 pump) Not 100% sure , but I think correct.

The select a choke should be turned to cyl-bore or IC for slugs . 00 buck should shoot well at that setting also but can be fired with tighter choke if desired.

Chokes run from clyinder bore (being the most open and basically the inside dia. of the barrel without restriction at the end) to Full choke which is the most restricted and gives the tightest pattern generaly. From open to full the ranking is : Cylinder bore , Improved Cylinder, modified cylinder, and then full choke.

Thank you, I appreciate that.......it was very helpful. I was thinking of cutting it down to 20 inches or so for camping or home defense. It does have a "bead" halfway down the barrel.......I could use that for sighting purposes I guess. Do these "beads" screw out or are they tapped in? Thanks again, John

Most front beads are threaded and generaly use a 3-56 thread. This is not always the case, but most use that size. ( 6-48 thread is the second most popular)

Most center beads are pressed in and have no threads. On a ribbed barrel it is not that hard to drill and tap for the front bead as the rib allows you to find the proper center easier than a plain barrel would. I think the center bead might be too small & to far back to make an effective sight on a 18 to 20 inch barrel.

If it is an older Ted Williams, it may be a High Standard. If the barrel is threaded in to the receiver verus a take down model it is probably a High Standard.

For a cross refence go here and instead of cutting it down why not pick p another Win 1200 barrel?

I bought a Western Auto 20ga pump last month for 100 bucks also. Took it skeet shooting last week and did pretty good with it. Well at least as good as I usually do with my Mossy 12ga.

So back to your Sears TW, why not keep the barrel orginal? It would be fun to pass down to a grandchild and explain to them at one time you could just walk into Sears and buy a shotgun and walk right out with it.

RoyG,
Keeping the barrel might be a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion. I've never taken apart a shotgun before. Can somebody give me just the basic take down so I can clean it and lube it? Thanks, John
