Hiya guys:)

Need a little info on a Winny i just aquired with a job lot of Shotguns last week.

It's a Winchester Model 12 serial# 17396** which lands it in 1959 as far as i can see.

Whats got me though is i have heard the shorter barrel versions are worth a tad more money.

Mine has a short barrel with a Cutts Compensator on it.

Barrel from the end of the chamber to the muzzle is approx 20" and from breech to muzzle is approx 24" without the compensator.

I took it clay shooting today and it seems to work well.

Chamber section has about 60%+ blueing left and the barrel and magazine around 40%

I was wondering what sort of price this particular one would go for as i HAVE had interest in it but don't want to be stiffed as the guy expects EVERYTHING for next to nothing:rolleyes:

Any info on what this particular type of gun was used for would be nice to know too thank.

Thanks

I am not a Winchester expert but 24" plus the Cutts is an odd length.
I suspect that it was cut and comped for somebody's handy bird gun and is not a factory product.
Is there a choke marking rather faint on the left side of the barrel right in front of the receiver? If not, maybe, just maybe, it was a special order from Winchester.

Hi Jim

The Choke stamp is clear as crystal and well stamped not faint.

It's a Full choke but i am told the Cutts Compensator is ALSO a vari choke depending on which ends you put on. Bit like the modern chokes you change the ends for differing choke selection.

I am wondering if this was a Turkey gun at some point????

Zeb

Could be a turkey gun, but way more Cutts were seen on skeet fields. The Model 12 had a tight full choke on it. Most ran about 40 POC.

My guess it's a skeet gun.

Nice wood in that stock.

Few folks want a Cutts anymore. It lowers value now.

Still, a Model 12 is a fine shotgun. One of the best.

HTH....

Thanks dave:)

The wood was a bit dull when i came by it and i oiled it back to health with a few coats of Teak oil then gunstock oil all the way.

I have seen LOADS of barrels stocks and forend grips etc on ebay but all in the US and non post international.:(

I saw some nice bits of custom wood for under $100 thats like £60 over here.

Would be nice to get a shed load of bits just incase and as said some custom wood too.

Thanks again

Zeb

The Cutts normally came with one or more choke tubes that screwed into the end. Does yours not have one?

If the barrel is marked Full, it was not an original factory installation. Whether done at Winchester, Lyman (maker of shotgun Cutts), or an independent gunsmith is not possible to tell at this late date.

It was indeed a chopped job as stated the barrel IS marked full.

Also the Cutts does have a choke (of sorts) in there you can just make it out on the photo. It's a short one and i was informed from a guy at my Clay ground that a Full would have been a longer end than the one that is in there now.

I am having loads of fun using it and it's raising some rather perculiar looks on the Skeet:D

I has the spreder tube on it.the full is about 2 1/2 inches long, they get shorter as they go through the different chokes.
We have shipped parts all over the world,if you need something we can get it to you.
We don't have alott of parts on hand anymore but there are some companies around that we buy from.
Midwest gun works, jack first and nu-line.

For those who may not know, Simmons has been upgrading Model 12s for a long, long time. Class act, IMO.

Another option would be to cut off the Cutts, saving as much barrel as possible, threading the remainder for tube and using extended tubes to lengthen things a mite.

Un fortunatley Dave cutting off the Cutts will make the barrel illegal in this country due to it's short length:(

I have to stick with it unless i eventually find a full length barrel to fit to replace this one.

Simmons

I have PM'd you back thank you VERY much for your kind offer i will see if i can get sorted with one and let you know.

Again thanks

Zeb

Yes and another thing...........

:fire: :banghead:
We can thank those two mega- S.O.Bs Misters Micheal Ryan and Kevin Weaver for helping to influence the Conservative government in 1987,to ban certain types of long-guns and to give us further restrictions, on what we had.Why in life do these:banghead: idiots kill with legally-held arms and give us grief-in the shape and form-of bans and the GCN?????????????:cuss: :cuss: :cuss:

They are all not fit or worthy enough to gaze upon a firearm, let alone use and possess them.

Zebedee:I like the look of that winchester mate, those types of shotguns with the classical look do appeal to me.I also liked the look of your other shotties and they certainly put a huge smile on my face and of reassured me, that It is still good to shoot in the UK-despite the odds against us-and that we can all be thankful that we didn't have the same restrictions put on us-like the Australians had put onto them-following the Port-Arthur trajedy-where semi-auto and pump-action shotguns were banned from ordinary use.

By the way,are you a Practical shotgun shooter as well and did you own pre-1988 legally-permitted shotguns, with folding-stocks and short-barrells?
