I've been working to transform my M1a into an antelope rifle for this fall, and with the gracious help of GunTech I'm installing a Super Sniper scope on an M1a, performing some basic NM upgrades, installing a Smith mount, TPS rings, etc. I've been learning this gun for the past year with the irons, and I've been extremely impressed with its ability as an iron sighted gun, and wow its a real pleasure to shoot. However, I'd like to have some glass on it for the plains of Wyoming. That being said, I'm still in the process of learning .308 ballistics, and am a complete noob when it comes to running it under a scope. So, my basic questions:

I just had a couple hundred rounds of the Federal Vital Shok .308, 150gn Nosler solid base, fall into my lap. A friend was selling off his .308 ammo and I picked it up for about .28 a round. I jumped on it, but have no idea on its specs. All I could gather from some very limited ballistic charts, it should be throwing the Nosler at about 2800 fps, with a muzzle energy around 2610 ftlbs.

Any comments on the ballistics of this round? I'd thought of using it on antelope this October, but can't find much in the way of good ballistic charts on this load past 200 yards.

To get a fairly rough figure to start from: I'm figuring with a 100yrd zero, 200 yrds will be 3.6 inches low, 300 yrds will be around 13.4 inches low. Figuring with the scope, I'd come up 1.8 (say 1.75) MOA at 200yrds, 4.45 (say 4.5) MOA at 300yrds. Beyond that, say, to 700 yards, I'm a bit lost. How can I figure out basic trajectories for a given cartridge, given muzzle velocity, etc., for x yardage, without actually having a 700 yard range? And any way I can figure out ballistic coefficient for this particular round? Wouldn't a .308 diameter bullet of 150grns in a boattail configuration be around 0.442? I'll give this a try, but could any of y'all verify these WAG figures?

Oh, and I'm launching this out of a 22'' 1 in 11 twist M1a. Any ballistics available for this cartridge out to around 700yrds?

Thanks

Nick
