Can anyone tell me anything about a Choate rifle barrel it is a mediumish contour barrel on a 1903 springfield action. we think the gun may be 30 or more years old??

Thanks

To my knowledge, no one named Choate ever made rifle barrels.

He may have been a gunsmith though.
The present Choate Machine & Tool company had to get it's start somewhere back around 1970 something, so it is possible Mr. Choate started as a gunsmith, and put a Douglas or other barrel on the rifle, chambered it in 25-06, and stamped his name on it.

If you have occasion to take it out of the stock, look on the bottom of the barrel under the wood for other manufactures marks, including the Douglas XX premium barrel mark.

PS: It is also possible it is a "25-06 Choate" wildcat cambering?
People did a lot of that back then just to have their name on something a little different.
It would be wise to have the headspace checked before shooting standard commercial 25-06 ammo in it.

Given that possibility, it might be wise to do a chamber cast, to see if it even is .25-06.

1903 Springfield Action

Some of the 1903 Springfield rifles were declared unsafe because of the heat treating or lack of proper treating. I can't remember what the serial no. was, but I think it was anything under 800,000 was not safe. Check it out.

1903 Springfield

Did you check with the smith I told you about? I've seen his work and I think he could fix you up. Al

old dog man,

we decided to try to find a used stock to test the rifle for accuracy, and if it appears that is has potential we may spend the money on getting it fitted, inletted and glass beaded etc! we will keep your recommnedation in mind.

1903 Springfield Stock

My grandson has a military 1903 stock he might loan you if you promise to return it. It was his great grandfathers that I restocked with a mesquite stock back in the 70's. Al
