Aim1 asks a good question. Do you know the name of the person from whom your dad bought the gun? Perhaps a member of his family would be interested.

In the situation described by the OP, I would sell that gun.

However, in general, my family (dad’s side) was a ranching and cowboy family for generations. He remembers dozens of different classic lever guns and handguns and crates of cheap milsurps that are now gone, save their memory. His family’s estate was never handled well and now he only gets to visit home places that were once family strongholds. Rather sad, but if it hadn’t been done before him, he would have done it. He didn’t want that same life for his kids. Had I any say about it, it might have been different.

He’s gifted me his deer rifle and a .22 boy’s rifle that he managed to hang on to. They aren’t worth anything to anyone else, so it’s an easy decision to keep them in the family.

Otherwise, he’d push me to move them on if I didn’t use them or enjoy them. He’s done that with other material things and I see the wisdom in it.

So I have this German byf44 P-38 in very good condition, everything matches. Has two original matching magazines and an original holster with a brass swastika on it. It's been in my family since the 50's. My dad bought it off a WWII vet he worked with. My father passed a couple years ago and it was in with all his stuff. It got me to thinking about my stuff and who would get what. As far as firearms go, half of my kids won't touch them and the others are just not interested and their kids run away if they see one so there's nobody I would leave it to. Also, it's not a type of pistol I would have ever bought. At my age I just don't see any practical reason to keep it but there is that sentimental thing gnawing on the back of my head but then it's not like my dad is the one who took it off the battlefield but it is kinda cool to imagine it's history but then if I sold it I could get this scope for my .308 but, but, but.........

Anyone been on the fence about an inheritance before?
I've not had that particular dilemma, but just want to add 2 cents. The combo of gun and holster in good condition with matching mags is worth a fair bit of money and would be treasured by many collectors, so be sure to sell it well. I did have a guitar and banjo that belonged to my brother. My siblings and I held on to them for years, hoping someone in the family would develop a talent/interest in stringed instruments. After several years no one seemed interested, so I sold them and split to money with other family. No one objected and we all feel OK with it. I'm sure you would too.

To be clear I said no on the vote. But in your situation I can see it. Me I’m like if my kids got rid of my guns and didn’t pass them to the one kid that would keep them I’m coming back from the dead to haunt them. No peace I’m knocking over more stuff than the cat.
I voted the same. I have also made that declaration in my own home to my family. That bed frame will be shaking!
