Hi folks, I have still not been able to get any pro/con input regarding Brian Lamaster's school - Innovative Tactical Concepts. Does anyone NOT affiliated with them have any input, good or bad? Thanks.
I've never trained there but was interested when I talked to one of their instructor's at a gun show. He said the school focuses around close quarters combat in general rather than just being guncentric. He claimed there was alot of hand-to-hand training involved and almost all of it was focused on the 0-6 ft range.(Although this was my experience with TDI handgun level 1 and 2 as well)
I took their Advanced Pistol Fighting course (now called Fight! Integrated Concealed Carry).
The course focuses on using a pistol with unarmed combatives. 2/3 of the two days involved drills with training pistols. The afternoon of the second day was live fire combined with open hand drills. There's also time spent firing from vulnerable positions (e.g. back) and rising while firing.
The course is a bit unique and not one for learning the mechanics of shooting or pistol operation.
If you have a hole in your defensive skill set and are largely unfamiliar with open hand fighting (as I was), it's a good place to start. Their instructors do emphasize open hand techniques and are quite skilled in this area. They do a good job showing you how and when to draw and implement the pistol into a fight.
They offer other courses as well, including police and SWAT training. I believe Cincinnati has used them.
Brian does offer a unique perspective in that his first focus is not the firearm but body movement and martial arts. That's to be expected given his 20 year background in that field.
Thanks. Sounds like it would not be the course to take, if you were only taking one, but maybe that's why it's called "Advanced." Any others have input on this school?
