I ordered a BCM 14.5" upper and a DD 9" Lite Rail as well. I have never installed a hand guard before.

Would someone be so kind as to let me know what tools I will need to install this and how frustrated I will become in the process? :)

Thanks!!

OK, I already see a problem. My flash hider is permanently installed!! So, it looks like I have to go to a gunsmith, correct? Or, is there another hand guard that does not require the flash hider to be removed?

I recently installed a DD Omega on one of mine, and it is as easy as it gets to install, and so far feels solid enough for my purposes. It is even free floated, which makes it pretty unique in terms of rails that don't replace the barrel nut, to the best of my knowledge.

It won't be quite as solid, but the tradeoff for ease of installation is worth it in my opinion if you are working with an already assembled upper and don't need a true hard mounting point forward of the receiver. It will also be a lot easier to swap around if you are prone to "refining" the configurations of a few rifles.

I was planning on keeping it but I don't have my heart set on it.

Do you have the special wrench to install the barrel nut?

You'll need this to to secure the barrel nut to your upper. It's only $10.00.

A vice and a couple of tools from Brownells will make life easier.

Upper Receiver Action Block to secure the upper in a vise so you can get enough torque on the barrel nut without damaging the upper.

AR15 FRONT SIGHT BENCH BLOCK are designed to make sure you punch the taper pins in the right direction.

BCM Front Sight Base pins are very tight. Here's how BCM describes removing them:

If you get these tools, it won't be that bad. IF you try to do the rail install without these tools, YOU WILL HATE LIFE! (Ask me how I know... :fire: ) Besides, If you invest in the tools you'll have them for future builds.
