Installing AR sling adaptor

So I bought a "tactical" sling and adaptor for my AR. How do I remove the locking nut on the tube? Is it safe to use pliers? It looks like it was designed for some special tool.

I had one of those and it was garbage. The little nub that goes into the notch on the castle nut snapped right off.

It grabs the castle nut in 3 places instead of one.
