Installing FNX9 mag under pressure

I was in my first USPSA match on saturday. I have only fired my FNX9 on the range prior to this and installing a new mag have generally had the slide open. I have never tried loading with the slide closed and one in the chamber. I was surprised at how much force it takes to install a full mag and make it secure as opposed to having the slide open. As a result I had 3 mags at different times fall out after I had thought they were secure so my times sucked. My question is has anyone else had this problem? Can one damage the pistol by slamming the mag in hard? What causes the diffference in force?

As an aside I was in the production class and found out after the match that production class is only allowed to have 10 in the magazine so I was in violation at the start with 17. I was wondering why they were changing mags so often... Duh! I wasn't nearly as fast as my competitors with double shots to each target but I was in the A section most of the time while they would be AC or AD. Lots of fun though. My palms were sweaty at the start.... alot different than the range.

Great link there KAS, I was considering the FNX but haven't had the chance to get my paws on one yet. I'll have to keep that little change in the mags in mind.

How long have you had it? The springs on my (40SW) mags are really stiff, too. If I used it for SD, I would download 1 round on my spare mags, personally.

Side note, it doesn't need to slide forward to lock in, like in the video link in post #2. The tension of the mag spring is what makes it difficult to seat a full mag on mine.

The change in the magazine latch was done to make the FNX completely ambidextrous. The FNP has a reversible mag release. The FNX has an ambi mag release.

I haven't had that problem with the mags. I have seen that video before and tried it but my mags seem to fit tighter than what was shown on the video. I do not have to slide them forward for the latch to engage both full or unloaded mags. I have shot ~ 700 rounds through it so far without any FTF or FTE's so i have been pleased with the FNX9 other than the mags falling out ...at the worst time but that may be my technique since I don't like to abuse my weapons. having 10 rounds in the mag will probably lessen the force needed. I agree with GLOOB about the mags springs being stiff. I bought a loader because trying to get those last two rounds in was a pain...literally.

How does your FNX9 shoot? Is it sufficiently accurate? I handled one in a shop in Houston recently and really liked it. If my G19 doesn't work out that is where I am going next. I understand you can carry it cocked and locked like a 1911. I'm not big on DA actions since I enjoy shooting 1911's the most.

Mine is a soft shooter and as accurate as I am. I really like my FNX and FNP. The triggers in SA are pretty darn good, I'll add.

Seating a full magazine against the feed boss on the underside of the slide will have to displace the rounds down somewhat. As you're pushing the rounds and follower downward in the magazine, the spring and any internal friction will resist and effort becomes greater.

This is fairly normal, that's just how magazines work. You could make sure the internals of your magazines are clean, but you don't want lube in there (grit sticks instead of blowing through) and you surely don't want a weaker spring in there ... the only other solution would be to download the magazines, which I'm not a fan of but might be an option for racegun use.

The accuracy is great once I learned proper trigger control. The DA trigger squeeze smooth but heavy. SA is great and one of the reasons I bought it. You can carry it cocked and locked like a 1911 although I don't have the confidence to carry it that way and prefer to use DA for the first round . I trained on 1911's back in the day so I have always liked the manual safety aspect. I'm pleased with the FNX9 other than the scarcity of accessories.

There are finally some parts out for it. I didn't have a problem finding nice OWB and IWB holsters for mine. In fact, Galco makes an IWB holster of my favorite line (Summer Comfort) for the FNP/FNX.
