I bought an adjustable gas plug for my Garand to be able to use some commercial loads without problems. I am ready to install it but have two questions. First is should there be any thread lock or sealant on the gas plug? Second is what is the correct torque to apply to the new plug?

No sealant or Loctite.
There is no spec for how tight.

Simply screw it in tight enough that it won't come loose under recoil. If it comes loose, you didn't tighten it enough.
To help get it tight, and mostly to prevent stressing the gas cylinder or barrel splines, use an aluminum gas cylinder wrench.
These are cheap and can be bought from Brownell's, Fulton Armory and other places.

No, the M14 and M1 gas plugs are totally different. The M14 tool will not work for a Garand.

Never, ever, use a thread lock or sealant on the gas plug. Once that thing carbonizes up, and it does that very well without sealant, you will find it one heck of a fight to break it loose.

I use Antiseize on the threads of the gas cylinder lock screw. Available from Auto stores, used on exhaust manifold bolts. This is to prevent it from carbonizing in place.

Heck if I know. I use a Gas cylinder wrench to hold the gas cylinder in place, and the GI combination tool. The one that is slotted to fit the lock screw. I get it tight.
