I'm about to drill for sling stud installation for an upcoming Appleseed event. On two of my rifles, on the stock, there is a little white ring with a black dot inside of it about 4 inches from the butt plate, right where the stud should be. on my Marlin 780, it's a small plastic piece set into the wood, while on an old Ranger .22 it's just paint.

Is this a guide for installing the studs, or does it serve some other purpose? The paint would lead me to believe it is, but I'm a little hesitant to take the drill press through the plastic without finding out it's purpose.

Thanks guys!

It's sort of a Marlin trademark. Some of my Marlins have it, but at least one doesn't. It's the Marlin "target" and I don't think it's for installing a sling stud. I have Marlins with factory sling studs, and the target elsewhere on the buttstock.

I'd put a stud aft of the marks in the pictures, anyway.

I'm glad you asked that question because I have rifles with "factory installed" studs and they "aren't" where that little marker is. So, I have been wondering why???...just never think to ask.

Thank you ArmedBear!!!

Yup!
The Marlin Bullseye in the picture is WAY too far foreward for a rear sling swivel to work right.
That far up the stock will not give you good sling support from a shooting sling.

The proper location is about 2" - 2 1/2" in from the butt.

Well, lookee here: http://www.marlinfirearms.com/CustomerSupport/faq.asp

rcmodel knows his stuff!:)

12. What is the small round black and white dot on the bottom of my Marlin stock?

This is the Marlin "Bullseye". This trademark has been used since 1922 on all Marlin walnut buttstocks. Please note that this is not a suitable place to install a swivel for you firearm. Swivels should be mounted approximately 2 inches from the toe of the butt.

This may be a little off-topic, and I apologize if you already know this, but be advised that at Appleseed they recommend the use of a USGI web sling, which requires 1-1/4" sling swivels, as opposed to the somewhat-more-common 1" swivels. They will tell you that any sling can improve your shooting, but the USGI sling can maximize the benefit.

Good luck and hope you enjoy the Appleseed!
