I am thinking about building an AK from one of the kits floating around... but I want to stay very LEGAL, even after the Ban dies.
ALSO and of more imediate import, I have a poly tech down folder (PRE-Ban)which needs the folder mechanism replaced.. it doesnt catch propery and the stock flops intead of sticking in place. ANy observations? Thanks

If you use a finished receiver for the build (the OOW receiver for instance) it is pretty darn easy to do a "screw build" with any of the good quality kits that still have the trunion on the barrel. I did mine (Bulgarian AK74 plum kit from K-var) with a 80% bent blank receiver that you have to finish yourself and even that wasn't too hard, hardest stuff and longest time spent of the whole build was finishing the bent blank...

If you want to do a rivet build like the original you need a 10ish ton press and several jigs for the various pressing operations and crushing the rivets, which aren't cheap/easy to come by...

There's also a method that involves welding instead of screws or rivets, seems easy to me if you have the equipment/know-how to weld, but I don't so...

There is a tutorial for a build on a bent blank at: http://www.acearms.com/tutorials/blank_build.shtml

There is a good tutorial for a build on a finished OOW receiver with a AK74 kit at: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=4&f=51&t=60777
