Interchangeable Ammo

I think theres a vid of a guy shooting a 270 in a 30-06; came out like a squib.

I was hoping you'd tell me if a 45-70 would 'work' in a 45-90 or -120 etc; or is the jump too much for it to 'work'?

Greg

A .45-70 is not going to blow up a .45-90 or longer, but you may not hit much, either, what with the long jump through the .3" of extra chamber.
I always figured that was a kluge so people could say they had shot Grandpa's Gun on "ceremonial occasions."
For regular shooting, brass and some ammo is available for a lot more of the old calibers than there used to be.

According to someone in my division many years ago, the Cajuns are quite fond of chambering .44 Magnums in their .410 shotguns.

He called them the equivalent of "crazy-stupid", though, and he didn't use polite language to do it.

There are, however, .410 shotguns made to also fire .45 Colt.

Ed Harris described dropping a mild .44 round ball load in a .410. All went well until he shot a ball out of something harder than straight lead. Then he had a barrel split at the choke.

Thanks Jim, that's what I figured.

I have a friend who owns a -90&-120. He has lots of brass and lots of lead to go with it. I haven't shot them yet, but I shot his .500 3.5" BP express double: turn of the century lion gun! Lion on the receiver and all...he's never taken it to Africa though... Pity, he might have got Cecil's granddad and saved us liberal vomit.

Kind of off-topic but not...guy came in to the shop with an old single barrel shotgun to sell. Marked "44 shot". Even had a box of ammo someone at another store sold him, telling him that it was made for the gun. Ammo was Rem 44 Mag, JSP. I quickly separated him from his ammo. Wouldn't give him enough for the gun.

As someone else said, "45 AR in a 45 ACP revolver" does not apply to single actions - Rugers, pre-war Colts, and several Italian clones.

Is this because the rim is so thick it prevents the cylinder from turning, or does it merely force the user to load every other round because the rim is too wide? Just curious.

Too thick to fit.

It is .029 thicker then .45 Colt.
And the .45 ACP cylinder maintains the same amount of headspace.

Never heard of 44 shot: but it reminds me of a brand new LGS that opened to a ton of traffic. The owner must have had a neighbor or or brother volunteer to help him out because it was so busy. I asked to see the Sweed Mauser (he had to ask which one it was) then handed it to me without checking the chamber. He and the guy who sold that box of ammo ought to be taken to school before they set foot in an LGS again!
