LGS has a Charles Daly SSA clone in .45 LC. Some kind of mat finish makes it look like a cap gun. Hard to even see Charles Daly on the barrel. Nice wood grips and brass grip frame.

PERFECT timing. PERFECT lockup. When you cock it, it sounds like a Colt SSA (which I bet means same type lockwork.)

Has KBI-HBG,PA F.LLI PIETTA-ITALY on the bottom side of the barrel so it's made in Italy.

$250. Has not been shot much at all.

So, what are your experiences it such a piece? I'm not much of a Cowboy shooter but a .45 LC is nothing to sneeze at. And I reload for .45 LC!

Worth the price? Do they shoot strait? Last long (I'm not expecting Ruger strength, just Colt SSA strength.) Are they .451 bore diameter?

Thanks,

In the cosmetic and mechanical condition you describe, I think $250 is a good price but not a steal. If you get it, you are correct to shoot Colt loads, not Ruger. Most of the Italian clones are reasonably accurate, based on my experience and that of others competing in Cowboy Action events. Don't be surprised if it shoots low. Front sights are often high to allow you file it down to shoot to point of aim with your chosen ammunition.

It is a Pietta, not one of the best Italian makes, but not too bad. See if you can dicker and get it for $200 or $225.

Howdy

I'm sorry to be a school marm, but SAA stands for Single Action Army. SSA doesn't stand for anything. Sorry, but I just can't help it, drives me nuts when I see folks accidentally type SSA.

Pietta copies of the SAA are generally not quite as good as Uberti copies, but they are not bad. Recently Pietta has been improving their quality a great deal so they are just as good as Uberti, but I think the one in question is not one of those.

Yes, the lockwork will be the same as in a Colt, four clicks. Generally speaking groove diameter is .451 for all the Italian imports, but you would have to slug it to know for sure.

The brass grip frame is to keep the price down, Colt never put brass grip frames on the SAA.

If it locks up well, $250 is probably not a bad price. Can't tell if it will shoot straight until you shoot it.

What makes it a Charles Daly? Anything special in the way of set-up or markings? Or just another importer?

Bob Wright
Like the old 'Western Auto' brand, or Sears 'Revelation' brand, they are just made by another manufacture and the importer's name is stamped on 'em.

This one has fixed sights, like a Colt SAA (yes SAA) 1873 model. In fact it's a spit'en image except for the awful dull, almost parkerization finish this one has.

But I say it locks up real good (I know the cylinder can rock a bit and accuracy is fine, but I like my guns to be zero-zero, perfect lockup.) This one has perfect lockup.
